It shows. But that's what makes it atmospheric. When one thinks about the sea, what usually comes to mind is happy naked people in warm weather. So when you look at this picture, showing someone with dark clothes and an umbrella just staring at the sea in a not so good weather, it makes a direct contrast to what you had in mind, which is what makes it cool.

I don't know if this is what you or your friend intended, but when I look at the picture, the meaning for me is "hope": that even when the weather is shit one can still look at the sea and see happiness....

Or maybe I'm looking too much into it. It's anime's fault mind you.

Don't forget to look at the back of the book where all the kanji are listed for each chapter (starting at page 262). It's good to start learning the basics from there because those tables also include other compounds that use the same kanji, so you can start building your mental connections very early.

You'll also find vocab lists at the beginning of each chapter as you progress through the book, but those usually contain a bit more, so it's easy to be overwhelmed. It doesn't hurt to learn everything, but know your limits.

Thanks for the tips. I add the vocabularies in ankidroid application on my phone and then review them each day.

You can get a very close translation with something like French into Italian, but with languages as different as Japanese and English, you're often rewriting as much as you're translating, and it sometimes becomes more about conveying the overall intent of lines than translating their exact meaning.

Yeah I don't read foreign books translated to English (I have read shitty French books in French) (unless you count manga) but essentially it's just much MORE text than would be in a video game, so I could see that being ultra hard.

I can't read that! I understand very very little french. (Just about 25 words probably) but I like french music.

There's also the fact that a large chunk of the text in videogames is either dialogue or narration, both of which tend to be fairly universal in style across language. Prose, though? Not so much. Japanese fiction reads reaaaaaally differently to English fiction, and even translating a short story is a big effort.
