Definitely figure out what you want in terms of games. You can get away with a lot less if you don't want to pay the latest garbage on max settings.

I'm almost done carving a new handle for the crosscut saw I picked up some months ago.
As long as the Social Security Administration paper pushers are sending me TP to inform me that I'm sane now and no longer eligible for continued retirement with a 1-800 number to appeal a legal decision when I want to take their jobs now that they think I'm sane in an overqualified capacity as volunteer administrator at their lunatic asylum disqualifying severe social disability in a beaurazy that has long since driven me batshit with paperwork when there are SWAT team witnesses to being scolded at length without any disagreement with what I said to them anything but sanely as an unarmed man not afraid of anyone due to having been traumatized to the point I have nothing left to fear; I can be reached at my 1-800 number as I never cease to unappeal.

I kinda did but having something a bit beefier than what I was originally thinking would be a good idea.
for example I was thinking a intel core I3 quad core 10-12th gen but after looking at some of the newer games I'd like to check out an I5 would be a better choice.
I might consider an AMD but my experience with them is limited and not very positive they've all been underpowered but then again I didn't/don't have a top of the line series cpu either.

Intel and AMD are competitive with each other again.

As I mentioned before, anything you buy from C2D on up is going to run circles around your current CPU. Your best budget choice for all new HW would probably be a modern CPU/iGPU.

You can see here that Skylake is still offering acceptable performance in modern titles. Ivy and Haswell probably aren't far behind. Finding a combo deal for a cheap enough price shouldn't be too hard with a little patience.

I agree with the I5 idea. I got a fourth gen full PC real cheap and couldn't believe the difference. My Ram worked from the old Core2 I had too. So was able to bump it from the 8 it had to 12. Plus it's new enough to have all the modern bells and whistles like a multi card reader and usb 3 etc..
