The sucker is good for clearing holes after removing caps etc. Always good to remove as much old solder as possible and use fresh stuff.

If you're going a bit further (I mean stuff beyond basic like surface mount chips and such) then you might need to get some Chip Quik solder and maybe associated flux.
It's low melting point solder that makes removing ram chips and the like so much easier, it's amazing imo.
I've fiddled with some old boards from Beta players but trying to remove caps with braid didn't go over well. Should I be cutting the caps off first and then removing the dead legs ?
