Woohoo! After fucking around for a bit I finally found the ethernet controller drivers for my motherboard. Yay!
Theres been a weird curve in driver difficulty. For my 80's machines, drivers are nearly impossible to find. Anything I had Win7 on was virtually all PnP and now with Win10, anything even slightly dated is yet again impossible.
I'll be going with Linux not before too long.
Yeah I'm using 7 and it's a Dell Motherboard from 09/10 and took a tiny bit of digging. All good now![]()
Why are you still using 7? That's risky.
I installed win10 enterprise 64bit on an old Toshiba netbook and it runs better than the win7 starter 32bit that was originally on it.
Spoiler warning:
Maybe I'll gab 10 at some point, just hasn't been an issue. Mostly just for shows and old emulation anywho.

You can get linux distros built for just emulation.
With a media player too? I think retropie has kodi already there. maybe some of the other distros you can have some sort of media player too...I think batocera is debian based?and then there's recalbox & lakka.
I've tested batocera on a tiny netbook...32bit atom with only 1.5GB ram...and it's pretty easy to use. The hardware means I've only really looked at emulating old 8bit systems, which was my intention anyway.
Spoiler warning:
I did try testing the other distros I mentioned, but out of all of them batocera worked straight away on the crappy hardware I was trying to use. Lakka installed but the screen was messed up, apparently a common issue that can be fixed by ssh and editing configuration...meh I couldn't be bothered
Recalbox and retropie installed but not everything on the netbook was working (touchpad and I think one sd card slot wasn't working...maybe some other shit idk, I moved on).
