Yeah software works fine
OpenGL2 you do need the supporting hardware ect anyway, and the offscreen drawing ect are different per hardware pete's soft plugin is not so much hardware dependant though so works for everyone and can still look very nice for 2D games using HQ2X or higher if your Graphics chip set/CPU can handle those filters (listed under Stretching, those are more hardware dependant so some you may suffer from speed loss)
