Most are top down at this point. The genre is basically dead outside of fanservice Cave games though. :/

As long as you like Japanese games and indies it's alive and kicking. I have 22 Vita games at the moment with 4 or so more pre-ordered.

Examples? Can't be arsed to look shit up right now.
Toaplan: Truxton, Fire Shark, Dogyuun, Batsugun

Raizing: Battle Garegga, Armed Police Batrider, Mahou Daisakusen

So is memorizing really a big part of shmups? I was trying to add some random elements to my game but my friends was like, no shmups must have memorable patterns.

I understand this view point. I think both should be options, but physical is getting pushed out.

THE BEST METHOD to run PSX games (and everything else for that matter) is via Retroarch - http://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/
If you have any questions on how to set it up on Windows please feel free to ask, its very easy.

I do prefer physical, and don't like the terms of service for stuff like steam. But since I left my home country, having a lot of physical materials to take with myself here or there is a pain. It's already a pain with my PC and all the consoles. I don't really want to add a whole lot of physical discs to the baggage. And I really don't know where I'll be a year from now, it may be a different city, maybe a different country even. Steam is useful in my situation.
