Games like Suikoden, Grandia, Wildarms,FF, Breath of Fire....well 1-3 at least.
That Castlevania is like no other and even if you despise Castlevania normally it is still worth playing

Maybe it is time to move outside of PSX and move towards other systems, like Sega or Nintendo consoles, Sega do have some nice gems to offer (Megadrive to Dreamcast), Nintendo ones most have played through though, Translated ones for SNES are well worth looking at specially if there has been new ones done since you looked last, GBA though has tons of great RPG's both turn based and action (both with RPG stats so not counting Zelda ish games)

Beyond the Beyond is a very good game though for the PSX very much classic turn based style RPG, if you played the Shining Force games before (Megadrive to Saturn) then the battle system should feel familiar though Beyond the Beyond in not a strategy battle game RPG like Shining Force is, it's a single party battle system, the entire game even though it's more pure RPG than the cross breaded Shining Force, it does still have a Shining Force feel to it, hard to explain but I'm sure if you have yet to play it you will love it.

Xenogears, is also a great one but I'm going to guess you have already played that one

P.S. Grandia II is my fav of that series of games there are also at least 2 others III and Extreme that are all for the PS2 though (Grandia II is originally a Dreamcast game (best version with reportedly the highest quality FMV scenes) and is also on PC) [PC and PS2 versions use re-sampled FMV with quality loss, not that noticeable though unless you are comparing it]

At least that is one game to play

What about Beyond the Beyond, sounds just like the sort of thing you would want to play though it's kinda like a SNES RPG on a PSX (It got very poor reviews though but judge for yourself, I didn't think it was that bad, a bit olde fashioned yeah but still good)

There are other RPG's you may of missed on the PSX but they are mostly action RPG's (still with stats though) but not turn based

Time to move onto other systems though for you SNES, Sega Megadrive/CD, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast or GameCube/Wii, GBA, PSP

P.S. Final Fantasy 1 & 2 are good on the GBA and PSP adding new content to those extra dungeons in one and extra story in the other, exclusive to GBA and PSP last I checked the PSX versions have those missing

Final Fantasy 4 I think it is has an extra story in the Wiiware version (it is a new game with just that story) and the PSP version that has both the original story and the extra story

Never did like FF3 myself but it was released on a couple of systems, DS is the only one I can think of though off the top of my head but sure it was released on another system, PSP maybe

FFtiktaks I would not count as an RPG though just battle after battle no adventuring between at least none that I could see from the little I played of it, the only game with that type of battles I really enjoyed with no adventuring was Farland Story for the PC98 and the Shining Force series but the Main Shining Force Series does have adventuring between battles even more for Shining Force II and III, the Shining Series also have a good story that you do seem to get into

Default Recommend 360 games with AI Allies

My friend is going to send me his old xbox 360 he doesn't use anymore so hurrah! I want you guys to recommend games to me which involve AI allies as a feature. I already know about Halo and GoW. No need to mention those too, not battlefield or CoD either please. Everything else I am interested in since I am not familiar with the 360 library. As a general note, the more allies, the better. The smarter they are, also the better.

Question Best RPGs of all time?

I am looking to get into some of the RPGs I may of missed over the years and would like some recommendations of where to start. Interested in PS1/PS2/N64/NGC/Saturn/DC/Original XBOX/DS/PSP or even PC. I have played pretty much all the FF games. Not into Phantasy Star or Star Ocean.

Story and Gameplay are what would make me try a game with story being the most important. I have been known to play a game that has terrible gameplay but has a good story.(i.e. The Longest Journey.)
I would also be open to the ones with bad VOs lol The first Resident Evil was just hilarious to me with those VOs.

So please let me know what you all think I should give a shot.

One PS1 RPG in particular that I don't see mentioned too often is Breath Of Fire 3. The story itself is fairly interesting, and the main characters Dragon system is pretty awesome; basically, as you progress you collect various dragon "genes" that you can combine in different combinations to access different dragon forms. Otherwise the combat is your standard turn-based system, but I'd say the characters are varied enough overall to make it worthwhile. I'd also recommend the first game if you're into SNES RPGs at all.

Another decent, probably more discussed RPG is Legend of Dragoon. Again the story is (IMO) interesting enough to keep you engaged, though it takes a bit to really pick up. The combat system is also your standard turn-based system but with a combo system implemented, where you time your button presses to do more damage, and unlock more advanced combos as you progress. The only issue I've had with this is that some combos are a lot harder to pull off than others, and their difficulty doesn't necessarily go easiest-hardest from lower-higher leveled ones. Each character is also associated with one of 7 different elements, where it's split up into three different sets weak against each other (fire & water, earth & wind, light & dark, then thunder which is neutral). I'd say give this one a shot.
"I think that the problem with this video is it is highly derivative of many popular bands within the genre. Although when viewed on its own merits, it does have a deeper groove. However what it has in groove, it lacks in originality. One can't help but be reminded of such bands as Pearl Jam, White Zombie, Suicidal Tendencies and other bands that bear the mantle of so called "Alternative Rock". One is even reminded of Lorie Anderson when she wore curlers. Hehehmhm! This video speaks less to the heart and more to the sphincter. In closing, I think Korn would do well to learn more from -"

I'll definitely be looking into BoF3, that sounds really interesting. As for LoD. Does the combo system compare to the Chrono games? I recently tried CC and I thought the combo system wasn't that good. I know I said I prefer story to gameplay, but that seemed too much like a button masher. I can't stand button mashers lol. (I also always ignored squalls combo's in FFVIII lol)

Check out Shadow Hearts. It's a horror-themed RPG series for PS2, with great spooky story, interesting battle system(which is called "Judgement Ring" and implemented with QTEs), and enemy desighs right out of Silent Hill (basically, they are messed up, and descriptions make things only worse...in a good way). And there is also a Koudelka, spiritual predessessor for PS1.

All games(except for a SH3, which is a side story of sorts) are connected, so I recommend playing Koudelka, then Shadow Hearts, and then Shadow Hearts: Covenant. Covenant and Shadow Hearts 3, sadly, took a lighter route - less horror, more humor. And while Covenant still a great and spooky game, the third one got too "light" story- and atmosfere-wise; I think it can't compare to earlier installments of the series.

That sounds pretty good. Except for the QTE's lol
the combat isn't focused on QTE's is it? I only like QTE's in certain situations. RE4 is a perfect example of QTE done right, at least to me. But a game like God of War, where it is just QTE-focused, I could never get into.

No, you just have to push X at the right time. It's basically a reaction test. You got the ring, and an arrow. Arrow spins, and when it comes into an attack zone, you hit the button. If you get it closer to the red zone, you do more damage, or magic/item will work better. If you miss, you miss. Physical attacks, magic attacks, items, healing, gambling - all with the ring. Every character has a different ring. In the first SH ring changes accordingly to the weapon they have eguipped, in the Covenant you are able to customize it as you want. Also there a bunch of different acsessories and items that affect the ring in various ways, so there is plenty of possibilities for an experimentation.

There is some annoying "mash the button as fast as you can" moments in the first SH, but they don't really ruin anything. Although I raged during one of them, yes.

Also, if you have the PS3 or X360, play Resonance of Fate! It is really awesome!

RoF was too hardcore for me lol. Anything that has tutorials explaining as much as that game did, just loses me lol. IMHO no game should have that steep of a learning curve.

EDIT: after looking at some screenshots of Koudelka combat seems grid-based. Is this the case? Never cared for tactical RPGs.

I had no problems with the curve, even liked it. RoF was playing fair, is I was screwing up, it was only my fault. And tutorials are implemented nicely. In the beginning you have an option to go to the Arena, where you will be taught everything you need to know, step by step. When you finally understand the battle system, IT'S A BLISS all the way till the end.

Absolutely loved every second of it.

I tried. but those tutorials... are just too much lol Theres way to many for me to even try to learn... after maybe 6 tutorials I was done. And I prefer tutorials to be integrated into the core gameplay to begin with. Just helps with moving the game along. Rather than try to learn everything at once.

Looks like I'll be skipping Koudelka. Just cant get into grid based combat. But I'll definitely be checking out SH
