I only did anime, but we had editors. The trouble was that they favoured phrasing that was closer to the Japanese, even when it was really awkward, and that we were working within such ridiculous timeframes because of all of the petty competition in the fansubbing circuit that it was almost impossible to produce something that was error free. We often had releases out within less than five hours of getting our hands on the raws to translate, which meant that both the translation and the editing usually had to be done in two hours or so. That is nowhere near enough time to produce a really high quality translation of twenty to twenty-five minutes of material, irrespective of how good your editor and translator might be.

Good to get some insight onto the craziness of fansubbing as a whole.

True, true. Would be better if a few fansub teams wasn't trying to speed sub everything. I have no problem in waiting for quality over quantity.

Most people aren't like this. They want everything in an instant. How long do you wait for a website to load before you start to get frustrated? 5 seconds? Even that is probably too slow for most people and they start mashing the refresh button. Granted this example is a bit different, but the same concept applies. Everything is going to instantaneous delivery, and if that one thing takes a longer than promised, you'll try somewhere else.

Maybe one day I'll actually check out what they want a "proof-reader" to be. It seems like something that would be nice to do since I can't find a job.

Depends on what you mean by that, exactly. I can't give you any tips on the professional scene, but in fan translation circles (I only really experienced the VN translation scene), there are often TLCs (translation checkers) and editors. The former actually has to know Japanese and check for accuracy using the original script. The latter just needs to work with the translated English text and re-write it, if necessary, into something that sounds more natural in English. So usually native speakers of English are perfect for this role. I say "if necessary" because some people have this idea that the raw translation will always be an unnatural sounding mess requiring the aid of an editor, which is just not true.

Again, there are good groups out there too, and I think the principle of fansubbing is a very nice one. But don't get involved in speedsubbing. Just don't.

"All for the native quality" As someone on Crunchyroll put it when I had a fit about the editor sticking with obento in EVERY LINE OF DIALOGUE talking about the damn lunch box.
Just once I'd like a fansub group to release a RAW and call it "subbed". Would make just as much sense.

While I was reading Cage of Eden on MangaReader one group's translation was extremely hard to understand. Like, you would think they just took every word, translated it, and put it right in and decided that was the perfect way. So in the end, you came out with these huge clusters of sentences that just made hardly any sense until you read over it 20 times. It become a bit bothering to me for some reason.

Many people prefer them, actually. ._. Apparently it's "closer to the Japanese". One might ask why people who need fansubs in the first place are experts on what is and isn't a faithful translation of the original Japanese, but...

One of my pet peeves is people treating katakana as the sacred word of God and never daring to alter it. Like someone preferring to write a character's name, コレット, as Coletto. Just... why.

2. Convert all of said dialogue to romanised Japanese.
3. Create subtitles.
4. Have most faithful fansub ever.
5. ??????
6. PROFIT!

Well, this is in all truth, a faithful fan-sub. Funimation should stop dubs and just go for this.
