For some reason, I noticed the same with manga. And I'm not talking about hentai manga. Just regular manga. I've yet to see one single manga fan translation that was truly excellent. I'm not sure why it is, but my first guess is that the skilled guys stick to anime, which is more mainstream.

Yeah... I don't see that happening. Most skilled translators probably busy themselves with making translations for stuff that's actually worth working on. As such, hentai translations generally attract bad translators.

And honestly, I have better things to do than translate dialogue about someone's gargantuan boner.

Which is why translations usually suck. Then you have that weird fuck who decides to learn Japanese ONLY for the sole purpose of getting his/her (no discrimination ) rocks off, then proceed to "share" their translated crap with the net. *shudders*

I've always wondered if there is a huge lacking in proof readers, I've always been curious for manga because I've seen a lot of the most popular sites host releases with extremely broken English grammar although they rarely advertise for proofreaders being needed. Maybe they keep the broken English grammar to stay close to the Japanese wording?

I'd stab a guess and say its less time consuming, if they're minimalistic about it. How hard is it to throw subtitles in a video compared to typesetting a page with sound effects, multiple bubbles of dialogue and background shit that would be necessary to know about to enjoy the work?
Just a bit easier, IF they're minimalistic about it.
But some manga translators forget to translate sounds, and signs, and all that jazz. Lazy bastards.

Yes, they're either purists or they're simply bad translators, or both. Translation also puts your writing ability to a test: due to the differences between the syntax of Japanese and English a good translator will often rewrite and rephrase things.

True, but fansubbers are whole teams, each role is usually filled by a different person. So the translator will only translate, while the others do the subbing and timing and all that jazz. Elin was part of the scene for a while so I'm sure she can give you a better answer.

Maybe one day I'll actually check out what they want a "proof-reader" to be. It seems like something that would be nice to do since I can't find a job.

True, true. Would be better if a few fansub teams wasn't trying to speed sub everything. I have no problem in waiting for quality over quantity.

I only did anime, but we had editors. The trouble was that they favoured phrasing that was closer to the Japanese, even when it was really awkward, and that we were working within such ridiculous timeframes because of all of the petty competition in the fansubbing circuit that it was almost impossible to produce something that was error free. We often had releases out within less than five hours of getting our hands on the raws to translate, which meant that both the translation and the editing usually had to be done in two hours or so. That is nowhere near enough time to produce a really high quality translation of twenty to twenty-five minutes of material, irrespective of how good your editor and translator might be.

I've noticed that about the anime scene, it seems extremely competitive.
