I'll probably be very into this series by game 5 if it's at 2-2 or better for the Wings. Right now I'm watching with guarded intrigue.
And yeah, the step up to playoff hockey is like the step up to playoff basketball. It's beautiful.
I really hope this leads to more professional athletes in the big 4 sports coming out. The US needs to progress as a nation.
It will. It's still a long way off from being "acceptable," but it will. This is going to be the Jackie Robinson moment. The change won't happen immediately, nor is it going to happen in the next five years, maybe not even ten, but this will be the catalyst that helps push it forward.
The US has some very deeply ingrained bigotry that it needs to work on, and it's going to take at least a couple more generations to weed out the taught homosexual hate. Even then, it will likely reach the same spot as racism -- it will never be completely gone, but it will be reduced a fair bit.
Yeah. The pod cast with Wesley Morris was also very good. He brought up some good stuff about homosexuality in black culture.
And yeah, racism is still real, but it's much smaller and really nothing can be done about it. People have the right to be dumbasses as long as they aren't breaking the law. There are many people with lots of hate in their hearts. Life is way too short to be filled with hate.
Doesn't the US have anti-discrimination laws?
Such laws usually cover race, religion and sexual preferences.
Or are such laws more of a state by state scenario and not federal?
@Drag: Are all these hockey games going to end at 2-1? :O
I'll have to keep this podcast on my radar. Sounds very interesting. I'll give this a listen once the Detroit game is over. And yes, everything will end 2-1.There was a point about an hour or so ago where every single game was 1-1.
Those laws are for making sure people aren't excluded because of their race/gender/orientation. They really only apply to jobs, colleges, or anything where a person is being hired/chosen over another person -- applying for an apartment, homeowner's association, that sort of thing outside of the workforce. Anti-discrimination laws do not do anything against people who speak out against homosexuals, or who still have deeply ingrained racism. As long as it doesn't devolve into hate speech (inciting violence against individuals), then it's protected by freedom of speech.
I highly recommend Grantland in general Drag. Really good for sports and pop culture. Lots of smart, insightful articles as well as fun nonsense.
Yeah Title Nine or something like that. Honestly I'm glad that people do have the right to speak out in general. Sure you have wackos like Phelps but overall I think it's good for the nation. All that really happens in the end with him anyway is looking like an idiot. If you cut off Phelps then you have to cut off everyone else.
Speaaaaaaking of Phelps. Someone moved in next to him and painted a rainbow on the house. I lol'd and applauded the effort.
