Got a controller and a game, and checked the DVD drive in the ps3. No dice. The drive is apparently dead, but that's not really a problem and I can fix it later.

But...I hit eject on the drive before I tried my game, and out pops Call of Duty Black Ops

Gonna return my game, and trade in Black Ops too. Free money

Grabbing some of my PS+ games in the meantime. Time to plan out that huge HD swap.

Replacing lasers in PS3 isn't as simple as you might think. Needs to be a matching model and all that shit. The guy that had it before you probably already butchered it.
