I wouldn't call it a hoax, since it was never stated that "oh my God this could kill you," I was using it as an example of one of many unappealing things that the USDA allows done to their food which most countries do not (it's illegal in Canada and Europe, if you got that far in your research). Hell, back in the 1970s it was perfectly legal to use bleach to clean chicken. Unappealing process, but totally safe for consumption.
And bone marrow is perfectly edible, and in fact good for you if you aren't on a low-calorie diet. The marrow houses a lot of vitamins and minerals and has no saturated fats. There's a reason that most animals go straight for the marrow. As well, the marrow contains all the essential amino acids that you get from the rest of the animal. So again, I really don't see the problem here.
