Actually Inferno, I would really suggest trying lucid dreaming. What you seem to really need is something to distract yourself with and it's a fun concept. Plus if you manage to do it, you can have entertaining dreams as well.

It's not so much about emptying your mind as it is focusing it to the point of lulling yourself to sleep. It sounds like you're so worried about sleeping that you're waking yourself up to see if you've slept. I do that before traveling. Another thing you could try is look into lucid dreaming. There are tons of meditation techniques for that and they put me to sleep like nothing else.
This is great advice, if you are aware you're trying to think yourself to sleep you won't fall asleep and it will worry you that you are not asleep but instead if you just think about something for a long time and let your mind wander off thinking about something unrelated to sleep.

How badly did you burn yourself ? Last time I burned myself, using ointment helped the burn heal faster.

Did that work for you because lots of people advocate it but never say if they have done it.

I got forced into taking several classes I didn't need in HS. I learned how to completely zone out during those classes .

I learned to zone out in school when there were awards given out for football and I couldn't care less so I would count ceiling tiles.

I stayed in homeroom during all the school events at the end of the day. As long as I didn't get caught skipping them, my teacher didn't care.

I've never purposefully lucid dreamed. I have realized halfway through that I was dreaming, and then promptly forgot again until I woke up with that "damn, I should have tried something cool" feeling

Have you gone to a clinic for it? Sounds like you might want another look at it.

Actually, that's why I started studying Japanese in college - I needed something to do during lectures. Some of my best writing was done during that time, too. I'm way more productive when people are around but I don't pay any attention to them.
