Yeah, I might give it a try this summer. And I think my English is like this because I've been reading/writing and gaming in English since I was very little. I studied Spanish in high school and failed hard. Then again, the language itself isn't very appealing to me (no offense Cookie and Fer!), I had a bunch of different teachers and lacked in motivation.
I'm a bit more optimistic about Japanese. I've been exposed to the language for years now and picked up lots of stuff so it's not entirely alien/moon speak to me. Hell, I dare say I know more Japanese than Spanish. Which is crazy.
Yeah, unless you have motivation, you're not going to learn to speak a language very well, no matter how talented you are. My brother has lived in Japan for five years, and still doesn't speak much of the language because he can't really be bothered. :'D
I bet once you get going you'll be surprised at just how much you've picked up, even subconsciously. There are so many things in Japanese that I never really sat down and learned, but still manage to understand just from seeing them used enough times.People sneer at learning a language via pop culture, but it's really very doable so long as you don't think it's okay to go around speaking like Barbatos Goetia all the time. XD
If you start too late you may not finish before the end of summer.
I'm off.
Ugh, yeah. I've heard some stories of elitism and such. Oh, you were introduced to Japanese via video games and anime? Pfft, get back to us when you find yourself a "legit" reason to learn the language, you peasant. *cigar smoking/champagne drinking*
Edit: Later, Shardnax.
