    Default Tabletop RPG Thread! (Redux)

Alright, bringing it back, and with a little history:

Several months ago (I forget exactly when; I'm not one of those people who does things like remember when they make threads), I made a thread to talk about and introduce various tabletop RPGs (such as Dungeons and Dragons) to members of the forum, and possibly get a few try and join in a hobby a few members and I have had fun with over the last couple of years.

Then the rollback happened, and I lost the thread.

Then everyones' favorite Admin, Cookie Monster, PMed me a record of the thread.

Then I sat on my ass for the better part of 3 or so months, because I have this thing about making threads. Also, because I didn't like the 'format' of the old thread.

So yeah, this is me bringing it back, in a slightly different way then before. The view of these next couple of posts are to be a sort of resource and primer to TRPGs, and provide you with links to some free games that you can look at to see what you'd like, and various other things, such as podcasts, virtual tabletops, and other forums where these games are the focus.

I'll be updating every once in a while as my attention span allows, but if you want to add anything, or hell, even ask a question, feel free to post here. That's what this thread is all about, after all.

    List of Games:

Dungeons and Dragons / D20 System Based

    3.5 SRD (System Reference Document)
    http://www.d20srd.org/
    Genre: Fantasy
Notes: The Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 System Reference Document, which holds almost all the rules needed to play the game (except the experience charts to level up charaters, because of legal restrictions). It also holds a number of variant rules for the game, if you want to do something a bit different.

    Pathfinder SRD
    http://www.d20pfsrd.com/
    Genre: Fantasy
Notes: For all intents and purposes, Pathfinder is a re-balancing/re-envisioning of the base Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 rules. A decent amount of material is rewritten from the 3.5 versions, and there are new classes and feats. (Also lacks experience charts though)

    D20 Modern SRD
    http://www.12tomidnight.com/d20modernsrd/Home.php
    Genre: Modern/Current Day
Notes: The 3.5 rules, set to a current day setting. So yes, it has guns and cars, if that's your thing.

    Microlite20
    http://www.microlite20.net/
    Genre: Fantasy
Notes: A small and light version the the d20 rules, made by fans. Meant to be quick to understand and run.

    Labyrinth Lord
    http://www.goblinoidgames.com/labyrinthlord.html
    Genre: Fantasy
Notes: A callback to old-school (1981) D&D, it consists of the base game, and it's Advanced Companion, both for free (with no artwork).

    Mutant Future
    http://www.goblinoidgames.com/mutantfuture.html
    Genre: Sci-Fi , Post-Apocalypse
Notes: Based off the Labyrinth Lord rules. NOW WITH MORE MUTANTS. Also, guns. And plant people. Because when the trees learn how to use guns, you're all fucked.

OSRIC (Old School Reference and Index Compilation)
    http://www.knights-n-knaves.com/osric/
    Genre: Fantasy
Notes: Possibly the closest thing you can get to Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st Edition without actually buying the books yourself, it is a fairly large amount of information (At over 400 pages) for the price (of zero dollars and zero cents, like everything else here)

    Dungeon Slayers
    http://www.dungeonslayers.com/
    Genre: Fantasy
Notes: Though the game itself is based off D&D, the rules are fairly different (though easy to understand). Well supported.

    Hackmaster 5th Edition Basic Rules
    http://www.kenzerco.com/product_info...roducts_id=862
    Genre: Fantasy
Note: The Hackmaster Basic rules are 200+ page introduction to the full game of Hackmaster, that features 11 premade characters (but not the rules for character creation) and rules for for play up to level 5. Originally based off Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Hackmaster has now become it's own beast.

    D6 System

The D6 System is a generic toolkit system. What this means is that opposed to other games that have the genre and setting already defined and you set the game around that, the D6 system will just give you a ruleset and some setting books, allowing you to create the game however you want. Want to do Sci-Fi? Fantasy? Modern Day? Pulp Adventure? Some weird fusion? A generic system is better suited to it than most.

    http://www.wegfansite.com/forum/show...OGL-Books-Link

The above link goes to a page that houses links to most, if not all of the D6 system books that were released as OGL, as well has links to various offshoots/variants of the base system, Such as Mini Six. This also means I don't actually have to provide separate links to the material myself, so I win.

    Talislanta

    http://talislanta.com/
    Genre: Fantasy

Talislanta is a tabletop RPG originally released in 1987, and has since been through 5 editions, all of which were released for free last year. Its a large amount of material, and a nice setting, so check it out.

    Ars Magica 4th Edition

    http://www.atlas-games.com/arsmagica/
    Genre: Fantasy

Ars Magica is a game set in a magical version of Europe during the 13th century, in which demons, god, and faeries all exist. You are a member of the Order of Hermes, a group of connected mages that all practice Hermetic Magic, while all shooting for their individual goals. As opposed to normal role-playing games where you control one character, Ars Magica promote "Troupe-play", in which you control several characters you create. You control your magus, but also a companion (a person who may or may not be connected to the supernatural, but isn't a mage) as well as several grogs (essentially, red/mauve-shirts). Has great rules for spontaneous magic.

The setting is very well developed, though not entirely presented in the 4th edition core book.

    Anima Prime

    http://www.animaprimerpg.com/main/
    Genre: Fantasy

A game inspired by the Final Fantasy Series and Avatar: The Last Air Bender (among other things) this game is Anime Based and proud of it. While the version with artwork is 10 dollars, the free Creative Commons version (which lacks artwork) can be downloaded from the bottom of the site, along with free drafts for several other optional subsystems.

    Eclipse Phase
    http://robboyle.wordpress.com/eclipse-phase-pdfs/
    Genre: Sci-fi

Eclipse Phase is a transhumanist sci-fi RPG where you play a member of the remnants of humanity after they are forced to leave Earth and colonise the stars for their continued survival. Granted, over the years, the idea of what is 'human' have gotten skewed... Advances in science make it possible to change anything about yourself on a whim, even bodies. Especially bodies. My description on it won't do it justice, so just give the game a look. While the game is being sold, it's writers have released both the Core Book and several Sourcebooks under the Creative Commons license on their blog.

    Warrior, Rogue, Mage

    http://www.stargazergames.eu/games/warrior-rogue-mage/
    Genre: Fantasy

Warrior, Rogue, Mage is a rules lite game with a slightly different way of looking at stats than usual: Instead of having stats like Strength and Dexterity, you instead have stats in each role. When doing an action, you roll the dice and add the number associated with the stat closest to the action (like, if you were trying to hide, you would roll the dice and add your Rogue score to it. All in all, a nice, simple system with plenty of material to keep you interested.

o mai gad I love you so much.

Iron Crown Enterprises doesn't have a free link to the content but you can order their game books from their site. They made lovely tabletop games like MERPs and RoleMaster. Oooo nope. their site is down. I wonder if that's permanent? Rolemaster is a lot like D&D except that with enough effort, your warrior can learn to use a spell list(i.e. Self Healing or Fire Mastery so he could run around blasting fireballs as he chops foes to ribbons)

The only RPG books I own atm are for Shadowrun. Helluva game, even if you run it without all the cyborg elves and whatnot.

So does anyone know if the new Rifts MMO is based on the table top? My brother owns the original printing of Rifts and Im just assuming that it would be since D&D has an MMO now.

You mean this one? They have absolutely nothing to do with each other, and the genres are very different, as the tabletop game is Science Fiction Kitchen Sink, while Rifts looks like a fairly normal fantasy MMO.

Though, it looks like the Rifts (Tabletop) game creator tried to sue the MMO creators because of the word 'Rift' in the title. Herp derp.

Wow. This is actually more active than I was expecting.

    That makes me happy.

    Also,

It's not an RPG(although it is a tabletop game), but well... I couldn't think of anywhere else to put this...

I think Jazz might like this.

Ooh, a tabletop thread! I like those!

Anyone ever tried GURPS? I'm trying to start up a campaign at my Uni, but it's going slow since we're in the middle of a D&D campaign.

For tabletops i have always wanted to play the Shadowrun d20, i love the setting and style, but none of my friends are into it, they like either the fantasy setting, or star wars. Another great game i have been playing lately is Heroscape, it is more a board game, but it uses cards with attributes and abilities and is very fun, plus there are different customs, some even put out by wizards of the coast, that add to the fun, such as star wars custom cards, and marvel, and so on.

GURPS is pretty great when it comes to having less restriction. Very fun to play.
