Not exactly true. Abandonware is still copyright infringement. Copyrights are valid until they expire. The reasons nobody considers abandonware a big deal are a) that the copyright holders don't care if people pirate it or b) the chain of people through whom ownership has passed is so convoluted that nobody really knows who holds the rights anymore, as is often the case when a company falls apart. Someone holds that copyright, and will until they die, transfer it, or it expires (which defaults to something like 125 years now).
