It's kind of a law unto itself. The Dark Phoenix saga happens right at the beginning of the first episode, so Jean is dead, then everyone has to go to Japan. It's hard to tell what they're going to do with the series at this point but it seems good so far. The vibe they're going for seems to be somewhere between Grant Morrison's New X-Men run and early Astonishing X-Men.
