The ending/leadup to the ending is most of the fun. It's also a wonderful example of a trainwreck. Except where EoE gets involved, and it just becomes a good example of nightmare fuel and badassery (somewhat for all the wrong reasons).
When I first watched Evangelion I binged through the series over a few days, skipped the episodes containing the original ending and went straight to EoE, by which point it was nearly 3am and I was almost passing out due to tiredness. It made the second half of the film... interesting, let's put it that way.

But even so, I'd never felt so depressed just from WATCHING something, holy fuck.
