Yeah, I was always told that too, but also to turn around when you're merging lanes to make sure there's no one in your blind spot. Truthfully though, the mirrors are adequate most of the time, but I usually look just to be safe. There's been a few times I was riding passenger in a friends car and they almost merged into another car because they didn't see it in their mirror. Most of my friends are shitty drivers though. There's been numerous times that I've feared for my life riding with other people.

I wish people told me helpful things when I was learning to drive.

I spent about an hour reading the little booklet before my written test for my permit, and pretty much passed via common sense. Then, as for actual driving, I went out once for a total of 30 minutes before getting my license. Didn't have to take the driving test, because the home course is badass like that. Parents willing to lie? Sure, you can get your license!

Anyways, the only advice I was actually given aside from stuff in terrible sitcoms where kids run things over, was that you shouldn't look directly in front of your car, but rather to a distance a bit down the road.
