I'm aware Dethklok is sort of a joke band, yet there is an album to that name. I dunno
I'm certain I've heard others, it's just matching song to band where I'm unclear

Ok. This is a quick list of some landmark DM albums, one for each substyle. You won't like all of them - this is just to give you an overview.
Death - Scream Bloody Gore
One of the earliest DM albums and a good look into the early thrash-inspired sound.
Entombed - Clandestine
Represents the swedish style. Much punkier than other sounds with a lot of d-beat and crust punk influence. Introduces the chainsaw tone associated with the entire scene.
Cannibal Corpse - Vile
Yes, they're generic as hell. They're also pretty much the template for a lot of DM. The so-called Florida sound mostly.
Autopsy - Mental Funeral
This is where we start to find DM bleeding over into doom territory.
Suffocation - Pierced From Within
Their first album may have been more pioneering, but this is where the sound was completely solidified. Harsher, more grind influenced and showcasing exactly how far NYDM had moved from the other sounds (and how much it'd stolen from early NY hardcore in the process).
Necrophagist - Epitaph
I'll be blunt, I don't particularly like this album. It's extremely technical and showcases some insane skills on the part of the songwriters but thats the heart and soul of this sound - ultratechnical playing at the expense of everything else. Still, its about the most influential album in tech-death (even if I do think Cryptopsy and Gorguts had much broader and better versions of the idea).
That's a quick go-over. I've ignored some of the smaller regional scenes/sounds as well as the crossover genres to keep the list down to reasonable size.
Technical 'Insert metal genre' always sounds terrible. That being said, there is a new Power Quest album coming out this March. Arge is also releasing a full album and I'm curious to see how it sounds.

I disagree. It's been done very badly on quite a number of albums but it can be done well. Sadus, Annihilator, Cynic, Atheist, Cryptopsy, Gorguts etc.
Megadeth, Amon Amarth, Vhaldemar, Sonata Arctica, Children of Bodom, Stratovarius, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Hammerfall, Judas Priest, Opeth, Norther, Zonaria, Wintersun, Therion, Trivium, Sight of Emptiness, are all damn good bands I recommend you all of them

Why am I unsurprised that his list contains basically nothing but the most accessible metal bands with a relatively high profile?
I mean, they're not all bad but thats a pretty limited collection.
@Hypnos: Thanks for that broad defining Death Metal list, I'm in the process of checking them out
I can appreciate Megadeth, I never got super into it or anything, but imo the general consensus is Megadeth > Metallica (albeit I loved Kill 'em All & Ride The Lightning)
I found Children of Bodom to be pretty depressing, merely in the light that they've done much better.
their early stuff, plus the little dueling banjos a la Guitar & Keyboard.. fucking epic
You can't leave out Blind Guardian, there's something wrong w/ that.
