Of course, the whole elephant enemy thing in general is pretty ridiculous to fight, and of course it doesn't attack anything else but the PCs except in its intro cutscene.
That's another thing about RE games that annoys me, how you'll see zombie creatures attack other zombie creatures in cutscenes but they're always completely friendly ingame. In RE3 you're introduced to a hunter by it decapitating a zombie, and the Outbreak elephant attacks two zombies eating a Rhino (I don't want to even attempt pondering how slow shuffling weak zombies can kill a rhino )
    I know that.

It's not as if it can even feel pain anymore. You honestly think it's gonna care if a wall that it can easily break down is in it's way?

    It fell asleep, obliviously.

There are plant zombies in Resident Evil, called "Ivies". They spit poison.
It craves food and you're there. 1+1.

Hey, at least it's 'realistic'. I never understood why zombies wouldn't attack zombies in movies and games.

It never crossed my mind until you typed this.

Inbreeding. It explains so much about that picture. (And maybe more...?)
