Some of us on EP have been here for years. We have formed close friendships with certain people from being around them all the time. We value each other's opinions and sometimes like to have private conversations that the rest of the world cannot see, where we actually get reasonable responses. There have been many times where I have used Retro for help with my personal life, and I have seen others do the same. It's nice being able to ask for help from people without the troll comments rolling in, or having to worry about portions of my personal life that I don't want known to people outside of my friends leaking out there.
Correction: us newbs used to always post in the regular HO. The cool kids posted in RBT.
Solution: don't act like a jackass.
It's simple, really. By and large, the people who are respected on this board are people who are friendly and helpful and at least attempt to carry out a conversation with others, or know when to not butt into a conversation just because they read what is going on (hey, look, it kind of stems back to why we have Retro...). The ones who regularly get pinpointed as annoying users are the ones who either a) haven't learned when to not post something, b) never contribute anything when they do post, or c) are not helpful in any way and are actually detrimental to solving problems.
I'm not saying any of those are you, but that is the general trend that I have seen.
Oh hai~
Staff can remove this if they feel like I'm breaking one of the rules, but I feel like the full reason for why the threads were closed should be pointed out:
[ edit ] This sentence sounds really weird... there was really no hidden reason beyond what was stated by Cookie, but there are reasons that stemmed from us having the conversation after the proposal to close those threads that further legitimized the reason behind it. If that makes sense. GAH
Similar with the chat program, we felt like all of the threads were serving the same purpose -- they were all being used as a HO. Similar to the incident with the chat program, it is very difficult to moderate multiple HO threads and perform regular staff duties, and have some sort of a social life. Considering there is pretty much always a staff member around reading the regular HO, or at least backreading to some extent to make sure everything is okay, unifying everything into one HO makes it easier for the staff to do their jobs.
Ultimately none of us want to dissuade anyone from coming to EP, and we want everyone to enjoy their time here, but there has to be a limit to how accommodating we are so that we don't take on more than we can handle. Once issues started cropping up with having multiple HOs, and realizing that they were all being used for the same thing (yes, even the count-backwards thread was a "HO" in spirit), the proposition was raised for us to close certain threads. We discussed it on and off for almost a month before reaching this decision, and it did not come lightly.
I realize that it sucks for the select groups of people who actually did use those threads, but it's the same thing as what happened with the chat program -- some things have to be unified in order to make it possible for the staff to do their jobs.
(And that's the last time I'm ever going to reference any of this. Sorry if I stepped on any toes, staff. I'm trying not to moderate any more, I swear to God!)
