Nintendo Wii protection bypassed with Wiinja modchip

Probably old news, but it's the first i've heard.

Console hackers have released a modchip for the Nintendo Wii console. The Wiinja modchip is a coded IC that is able to bypass the copy-protection on the Wii, enabling you to make backups of your games or run pirated games:

The modchip is reminiscent of hardware mods from the days of the original PlayStation, requiring five wires to be soldered directly onto the Wii’s motherboard. It should go without saying that the console must first be dismantled and that the entire process would completely and utterly void the warranty.

As proof of the modchip’s operation, the developers have posted a couple videos on YouTube, demonstrating a Wii loading games burned onto recordable DVD media. A method to backup Wii games was revealed earlier this month, though the process of creating a disc image could take in the neighborhood of about fifty hours.

Currently there's still a restriction that you'll only be able to boot games with the same region code as your console.

Ah Region locking balls, same as the 360. Probably the only reason I won't mod my 360, region lock outs.

I think I'll wait till theres a region mod.

I don't have a problem supporting a new console.

Region mod supporter here as well.

It doesn't feel right pirating games which are currently in the market -- unless you actually WANT a console/publisher to fail, then it's OK.

this wii thing is totally unpractical right now, why spend 50 hours burning a game when it takes 30 hours to beat it. LAME... its a good first step now how long till the second step is built.

Yeah, but you know, once someone has ripped it and converted it to a proper format, one would just have to download and burn it - why would you be creating a backup of one of your own games if you're wanting to pirate it in the first place? :P

I could deal with that. Not getting a Wii yet anyway though. I am waiting for SSBB. And if I have to play that with the Wiimote then I might not even get it. I hope they make it playable with the cube controllers.

In other words, I don't think that the rent-n-rip method would be much of a factor, given that you can acquire stuff through alternative means much easier. :P

I can't. Rent and Tip is something that I have used for many xbox games in the past.

If the modchip can't be used to play games from any region, then does it even have a legal leg to stand on? x_X Or are they still playing the 'backup your games and thereby extend the lifespan of your originals' card? :wacko:

Apparently it's easier to pirate the console than to purchase it.. I've tried to get mine for more than one month now with no luck :/

I'm not sure the widespread 'buy a copied version in a store' option is a prevelant as you might suggest. Actually, other than 3rd world countries, it's nonexistant.

The Rent-N-Rip method is still very much alive and well, even with the rapid expansion of broadband. There's always a game you want that isn't 'out there', but it's on a shelf in a video store.

Uhh it's only Nintendo. I'm sorry but...They've been shit since the SNES, the N64 was O.K but it wasn't a great console, there was only a handful of good games. (Their portable systems are great, but they should give up with consoles) The Cube games are too damn expensive, and there's not enough good ones. The system lacks RPG's (ones that WEREN'T on the Dreamcast. :P) :split:

QFT. It's no different just because it's on a console instead of computer. It's still hurting the developers by reducing their sales figures. Not in how much money they make, but in a market sign of how good their stuff is to their publishers. Dev companies that don't sell well tend not to stick around, no matter how good their games might be, especially ones owned by a publisher like EA or Eidos.

As for the real topic, I can't say I care for a pirate only chip. I don't really get systems modded for bootleg games, I still buy half everything even on consoles I have modded :) I mostly want chips to play games I couldn't play otherwise, so translated games, imports, betas or whatever. Of course even if the mod could do all that I still wouldn't need it, because there's nothing good like that out there yet ^^;;;
