Default Nintendo Wii protection bypassed with Wiinja modchip

So the Wii is supposed to have been cracked already. Here is clip on YouTube of someone playing Zelda. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9LjmL8FUSk

Probably old news, but it's the first i've heard.

Console hackers have released a modchip for the Nintendo Wii console. The Wiinja modchip is a coded IC that is able to bypass the copy-protection on the Wii, enabling you to make backups of your games or run pirated games:

The modchip is reminiscent of hardware mods from the days of the original PlayStation, requiring five wires to be soldered directly onto the Wii’s motherboard. It should go without saying that the console must first be dismantled and that the entire process would completely and utterly void the warranty.

As proof of the modchip’s operation, the developers have posted a couple videos on YouTube, demonstrating a Wii loading games burned onto recordable DVD media. A method to backup Wii games was revealed earlier this month, though the process of creating a disc image could take in the neighborhood of about fifty hours.

Currently there's still a restriction that you'll only be able to boot games with the same region code as your console.

Ah Region locking balls, same as the 360. Probably the only reason I won't mod my 360, region lock outs.

And there's the small issue of it taking around 50 hours to make a disc image.

    50 hours would suck hard.

I think I'll wait till theres a region mod.

    I don't have a problem supporting a new console.

Region mod supporter here as well.

It doesn't feel right pirating games which are currently in the market -- unless you actually WANT a console/publisher to fail, then it's OK.

whoa creamed my panties with the awesomeness that was the dreamcast pirate scene.

this wii thing is totally unpractical right now, why spend 50 hours burning a game when it takes 30 hours to beat it. LAME... its a good first step now how long till the second step is built.

Now is this 50 hours of work, or waiting? I could deal with 50 hours of waiting.

Yeah, but you know, once someone has ripped it and converted it to a proper format, one would just have to download and burn it - why would you be creating a backup of one of your own games if you're wanting to pirate it in the first place?

(Oh, pirating Wii games is wrong, kids. Don't do it.)

I could deal with that. Not getting a Wii yet anyway though. I am waiting for SSBB. And if I have to play that with the Wiimote then I might not even get it. I hope they make it playable with the cube controllers.
