PS2 softmod help

I am trying to soft mod my PS2 FAT using the Free McBoot method, but instead of using 007 agent under fire, I am using Metal Gear Solid 3. I replaced NETDOWN.ELF with ulaunchelf's BOOT.ELF, as described in the tutorial on the site. When I swapped the disk using a homemade slide card, and tried to load ulaunchelf, but the PS2 recognized the fake disk, and gave me the disk read error. I just want to know what i did wrong here. I was using the original MGS3, not the subsistence version. as I said, my PS2 is the FAT model. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I tried to do it again, but I used the uncompressed BOOT.ELF instead, and I got the same results, with it asking for a PS2 or Playstation format disk. Again, any help would be great. Thank you.

Sounds like the disc is being swoped and the slide trick is failing so it is being read as a new disc (as if the draw was clossed with the eject botton)

Also, my PS2 has a giant HDD chunk on the back, and I have no idea if it is removable. Does this... thing... have anything to do with my problem?

I assume you mean a BBA.
If you don't already have a HDD in it, add one and play as many games as you can via the HDD.

I replaced the need for speed demo, and when i swapped it in the start menu and tried to load it, i got the same damn message asking for a playstation 1 or 2 format disk. What am I doing wrong?

007 Agent Under Fire is the only game I know that works for sure (make sure you use the original version, not greatest hits or whatever).

I don't know if any of the other games on the list have been verified as working


You could also use Swapmagic to softmod I guess, but I've never done it.

MGS 3 was listed as working, so guess this could potentially be a burning issue.
What media did you use to burn the ISO on to? You are looking for DVD+R or DVD-R (preferably +R), not DVD+/-RW.
Also, remember to burn at the lowest peed possible. You are trying to get it around 4x.

And you might be using a different version of uLaunchELF, so check the size that you need to change it to.

That is really all I can think of, sorry we haven't been much help.You might want to seriously consider the installation service.

SwapMagic makes it even easier you do not need to do any swopping at all as it can directly boot an elf from a usb stick, including uLaunchElf also some of the cheat CD's can also be used to install ESR/freemcboot

I have a guide for installing Freemcboot and ESR here although I don't have all the files in it anymore due to a forum crash a lil while back but it should still be usable as a guide

There is a list of other similar disks that you can use at the FMCB Homepage under "Installation". I mention this because I have seen SwapMagic cost up to 30$, and CodeBreaker cost as low as 8$.
