Data on your hard drive can't just randomly say "Lets send a signal to the sound card" Basically when something produces audio output, it gets sent to Operating Systems... instruction sheet? (Drivers is what they are, but I don't know what else you would call them) which then sends the signal to the sound card for playback. So if windows doesn't have 5.1 sound support, nothing can play in 5.1. Polobunny can explain it better then I can.

I've been helping him in IRC, everything is setup properly, and windows itself is set for 5.1, its just WMP and foobar I believe, he's going to try a plugin I sent him.
