What do you mean, Sasuke = fail? You mean the three Mangekyou Sharingan users? If so, well, I think Sasuke is potentially one of'em. We know Itachi is, and we know Kakashi isn't one of them, since Itachi didn't expect Kakashi to even have access to MS, and when Itachi told Sasuke about the three MS users, Kakashi wasn't exactly a candidate for that. The other person must be Sasuke, since Kakashi found a way to get it, so can Sasuke. And the third must be Tobi.

I think the creator's of Naruto have another trick up their sleeves where character's in the Naruto universe can acquire the MS other than killing their friends, and I think this is how Kakashi got his MS. I think the "other way" hasn't been revealed just yet

Where does it say there are three of them?

It says so in the Manga as well as in the Anime, and it is said by Itachi himself when he trapped young Sasuke in the third dimension and tortured him using his MS. This happened when young Sasuke returned from Konoha school to his village only to find it deserted and then entering his home and finding his mom and dad dead. Thats when Itachi reiterated those words. Edit: Either then or when Sasuke was running out of his house after getting shit scared and again bumped into Itachi

Killing your best friend isn't the only way of gaining the MS. Kakashi is proof of this.

He does have it. He used it against Deidara.

Word is, Tobi is actually Uchiha Madara. There's a spoiler picture of Tobi showing his Sharingan at Mangahelpers. Seems he pulled an Orochimaru, and got hold of another body, and became Tobi. He pretty much acted like a dolt on purpose.

Itachi, in another translation, basically knew that Sasuke wasn't dead, even though that's what Zetsu, and Pein told the rest of Akatsuki. Why would they lie about that? Me thinks Uchiha Madara, if that's really him, is planning something huge, and it involves the other two strongest Uchiha's: Sasuke and Itachi.

Nooo, I mean Itachi, Sasuke, and Tobi. The newest chapter reveals that Tobi has the Sharingan, but also notes that he has the power of Uchiha Madara. Kakashi isn't an Uchiha, and when Itachi brought it up to Sasuke, Itachi never counted on Kakashi gaining it.

Just read it myself also. Karin is more of a pervert than Jiraiya. She was set to rape Sasuke's ass. And, wow. Kakashi hit the nail right on the head with his Karin comment. And, now it makes some sense how Sasuke summoned Manda, and why he was able to beat Deidara. I mean, I knew he was good, but now it makes more sense. He absorbed Orochimaru's powers and abilities, and I didn't know Oro even had the ability to heal himself.
