Well, apparently cleaning the PS2 lens with a bit of alcohol and cotton helps.

RE4 doesn't skip anymore, and the disc isn't THAT scratched, just normal use scratchs.

Normally when you play after a while or you forget to return it to the cd case, you can get some minor scratches that are only visible if you look very carefully into the disc.

Especially 1, if you can look past the fact that it's a SNES game, it's awesome.

2 is slightly less awesome, but still massively awesome.

3 is a nice way below 2 in terms of cool.

I'm not biased based on console, only on gameplay. Though, I thought that it only came out in Japan. I assume it's been translated?

Alright, I'll get looking for it. I need to get started on downloading Vagrant Story as well.

It has been translated, and the translation is very well done and easy to find (I think a prepatched rom is on the EP main site, if not it's easy enough to find). The gameplay has been more or less the same throughout the series, although as the series progressed the combat systems got a bit more technical and complex (from 2 to 3 especially).

Also a great game. And about 100 megs compressed. Now that's cool.
