that is the aspect ratio, the ds has a screen resolution of 256x192.

systems like the gameboy and such with lower screen resolution will display fine.

but as for nes and snes and other of the like the image will have be scaled down to fit the screen.

Hmm, the nes emulators for DS don't do this?

I've been reading about the M3 and something called a Passkey. I'm a little confused as I read through the descriptions of it online. I know the passkey is needed in order to run DS games with it. Do I need the passkey for GBA, NES etc. on it?

if you don't have a passkey you would have to run gba emulators, with the passkey you can run emulators built for the ds.

The R4 and M3 Simply have built-in Passme support so they can be used to run NDS software from the GBA slot.

So what's wrong with scaling a spite based game anyway? Some of the NES and SNES games have already been ported to GBA and they look just as good (or bad) as the originals just on a smaller screen. Also that's what I was talking about when I said screen size. The PSP does have a larger screen resolution then the NDS and if I'm not mistaken it has a 16:9 aspect ratio (another clue that it was made with multimedia in mind and not really for games).

i'm pretty sure it was made for games but also has support for 16:9 which has nothing to do with multimedia... are you saying all next gen consoles are not focused on games because they all support 16:9, 16:9 is just a natural progression.

did you ever use a nes emu on the gba here is an example http://www.pocketnes.org/res.html

Well I'm not exactly saying that but I know that is what Sony is trying to do with it's nexgen console. Why else would they insist on using Blu-Ray when the X-Box 360 is still using DVDs?

the same reason sony insisted on using dvds in the ps2, and this is getting way off topic.

So you're saying with passkey that I would run gba games with a ds emulator. Without the passkey, I can only use gba emulators to run gba games. Is that correct?

Is there much of a difference between either choice?

no what i am saying is that if you only have the flash cart for slot 2 (aka the gba slot) you can only play gba roms, and emulators built for the gba such as pocketnes.

with a passkey you can use emulators that are made using the ds's processing power and also play gba roms.

Hmm, so it sounds like being able to use the ds' processing power even if I'm only interested in gba roms, is the better idea. I wouldn't have thought there would be much of a difference.

The Passme lets you use a GBA flash card to run NDS roms and software from the GBA slot. This includes all NDS homebrew and such. Commercial roms have to be patched to run this way though. Without the Passme you can only run GBA roms and other GBA base homebrew such as GBA emulators (emulators that run other system's games on the GBA) like pocketnes like Brightside said.
