Default Ewww what a sticky mess!

So guys I need some help here... my harddrive is a mess. And I only have myself to blame. I download like loads of images and other stuff. Suddently my desktop is getting kinda messy so what do I do? Drop it all down in a new folder (most often just called new folder). Then I download more and once again drop it down a new folder, along with the old folder I created. The result? A horrible file tree with million of subfolders and files... In worst case scenario over 7000 files and 400 folders. >___<

So I've tried really hard to sort it out but I just can't. So I need help here because this is getting out of hand.. Tell me how you usually sort files in a good and logical way. If you sort them that is... Also any applications that might help you out?

    Thanks!

...huh, what did you think this topic was about?

    Delete all the files.

Umm, I usually send everything to my second hard drive. There is where everything is organized. If I have movies, I have subfolders named by the genre of the movie. Same thing goes with music and installer/program files. As for games, I don't usually keep those around often. I usually just burn'em as quickly as I can. As for smaller things like documents, images, shit that basically doesn't need many subfolders, I just send them to a folder named Misc, or Stuff. Sometimes, Junk. That's really about it.

Edit: Shows us a screenshot of this file tree you speak of.

I do believe I've found the cause of your sticky mess. See, this is why we can't leave you alone with MGS4 screenshots anymore...

I used to just delete stuff. I mean many time I don't know what's inside those folders so no need to save it.

No pictures. Imageshack is being a bitch right now and I'm lazy. But it's probably isn't as impressive as I said because I just noticed that Windows probably count archives as folders. ~__~

Cosmic that isn't the problem because I've sorted my MGS4 stuff in a very good manner.

That sounds like my Grandad's PC, newfolder(x) upon newfolder, full and full with different things.
Then there's the BitComet downloads folder.
Myself, I like to keep everything tidy:

Unsorted mainly is just Xbox games I haven't been bothered to make a folder for.

I have a pictures folder, music folder, video folder, games folder, emulator folder, etc.

The pictures folder is organized by either date, for digital camera pictures, important vacation, Europe, type, MGS4 screenshots, and misc.

The music folder is organized by either artist, or game music. It is then further organized by album or game.

The video folder is organized by either what show it is, followed by season, or the movie. I also have a sub folder within the video folder that is similarly organized except it is all of my PS3 encoded videos.

The game folder is organized by system and region. The emulator folder is also sorted by system.

    BTW
Shouldn't this be in Computer Tech?

Well I didn't really find it a tech related issue so I figured I'd put it in F4A. I guess it's debatable though so place it wherever you want.

That's some nice organizing there, Josh. A "system" like that is just what I desperately need...

Astaroth, that's exactly what it is like. I'm way too lazy to figure out a name for each folder. So usually it's just "abhsavhdgagsk", "new folder", "aaa" or something...

My hard disk is divided into 4 partitions -

    1 - System - 20GB
    2 - Programs - 100GB
    3 - My Documents - 40GB
    4 - High Capacity - 135GB

Its a 300GB HDD, but after formatting I can't quite recall what they are exactly, I just guesstimated

    1 - Self explanatory
2 - Games and all sorts of other programs. Defragmented regularly
3 - Documents, Music, Pictures, program installers, drivers and all sorts of crap. The My Pictures folder is broken down into several other folders, either dated with the date they were taken or labeled according to what they hold.
4 - High Capacity - 32KB clusters, for ISOs, movies, and other large files.

My Documents -> My Pictures and Downloads. My Pictures -> Photos (pictures I took).
Downloads -> Used (for old stuff I don't want to delete. Sorta like an unsorted bin, contains rars of roms and cracks and patches and small programs, crap like that.
Separate from those, C: Stuff and Things. This is divided into Music, ISOs, and Emulation. Music is divided by album, ISOs are divided by game, Emulation is divided by system.

Not really. If they did, they'd organise stuff a lot better.

    good setup.

Crusher, use Ray's setup, you'll have a much easier time organizing those pics (the ones that caused you to make a sticky mess).

How I sort things? Let's see...
    Desktop:
    >Manga: Artbooks, webcomics, and occasionally, a manga or two. Well, no, not really - the only things in there are nine artbooks and a single collection of a handful of funny PartiallyClips comics.
    >Downloads: Generic downloads pertaining to game patches/mods, funny vids (pre-Youtube), utilities, and the such
    >Temp: Stuff that doesn't belong anywhere else. Right now, that includes the CoA of Vietnam, four pictures of my niece, a USAF "Identification Sheet", several CDs worth from Baen Library, and a distinctly different Iwo Jima (courtesy of another forum).

    C: (Tramontana)
    >Tempo: Downloaded files from torrents, DC++, and FTP. Stuff that needs to be sorted, but has not been yet. Considering it contains 52 GB, I have a bit of a backlog.
    >Music: Obviously, all music, directories by artist.
    >Website Files: Perhaps more easily seen. Avatars, signatures, those desktop images for other threads (despite several gaps caused by dying hard drives, I've been on fora that do that since 2001), and whatever pretty pics I find online.

    (Meltemi)
    >Episodes: TV, movie, PVs, AMVs, it's all in here. Surprisingly, it doesn't even break 400 GB. I'll just have to try harder.

Unfortunately, I have seen a different topic for the same title made in complete seriousness...well, admittedly it was also a lot less coherent, considering that the (obviously male) poster in question was typing one-handed and quite panicky about being a bit...well, stuck. It gave whole new meaning to mods "stickying" a topic for something like months afterwards.
