I just got through with a hefty thread on this for myself. If you have a slim line PS2 and dont want to soder then you should get a Magic Keys 2 Set along with Swap Magic v3.6 Discs.

But if you do however, know to solder or have someone that can do it for you, a modchip is the way to go. Swapmagic takes most stuff, but some games simply won't work with it. In some cases this can be fixed by using your PC, in other cases you are out of luck. Then there's the hassle of always having to swap discs when playing. You will get tired of this - you really will. If you do want a modchip, I recommend either the MATRIX INFINITY of the DMS4. Both chips play about everything you throw at them (Swapmagic's compatibility is great too - but not SUPREME). Matrix should be a little cheaper than DMS, and is a premium ps2 chip.

Warranty void is what i think he doesnt want. The chips you suggested really don't have supreme compatibilty according to your post either.

What do you put in the word "supreme"? I'm far from good at writing english, so I sometimes choose the wrong words. What I mean is that the chips I mentioned run close to all games released for PS2. Whatever it is to you, the chips I mentioned are superior to Swap magic when it comes to compatibility. That's not even worth discussing.

He just means that the chips aren't completely perfect either. And don't be so hard on yourself. Your written English is actually really good. It's better than that of some of my offline friends, and it's meant to be their first language.

    Anyway, yeah. [/off-topic]

Very few games don't. I have something like 260 games, including just about every "mainstream" title ever made. None of them have a problem working with the latest Swap Magic disk.

Then there's the hassle of always having to swap discs when playing. You will get tired of this - you really will.
Not really. I've been doing the swap for at least four years now, and it hasn't bothered me at all. It's just one extra step, and isn't obtrusive at all. In fact, after awhile you don't even really notice it. That's not to say that you suddenly forget that you have to do it, but that whatever small problem it may be at first stops being one pretty quickly.

If you do want a modchip, I recommend either the MATRIX INFINITY of the DMS4. Both chips play about everything you throw at them (Swapmagic's compatibility is great too - but not SUPREME). Matrix should be a little cheaper than DMS, and is a premium ps2 chip.
So have they worked out the overheating issues with slim-line modchips yet? I know that there was a problem with it that would cause your drive to go kaput pretty quickly. We're talking like within a half an hour of installation here.

If they've gotten over that problem, then great. I may even look into a mod-chip myself eventually.

EDIT: It looks like they've got a diode-fix that solves that issue. Still, they want almost 50 bucks for the chip. Add 100 bucks more if you want them to install it for you.

The only donwside the SM discs have is that dual layered games won't run, other than that the compatibility is great, but, yeah, snkupo is right, a modchip will have a higher compatibility if you know how to install it or you have someone to do it for you.

How many PS2 games are on daul-layered disks? And of those, how many haven't been successfully ripped to a single-layered disk? Very few on both counts, at least when you take into account the entire PS2 lineup.

So yeah, that's far from being a reason to go with a Mod-Chip over the cheaper and comparatively hassle-free Swap Magic setup.

Remember, the mod-chip option is only good if he has the money to get it done by the mod-chip seller, can solder, or knows someone who can do it for him. Magic Key installation takes like, five minutes tops. It's really all down to the resources available to him, but as I've not had any trouble with the latest SM disk, I'd suggest it to him over a chip due to the ease involved in getting everything together.

    You can't win from Cyber....PERIOD kupo =>

Anyways, Swap Magics are good. No doubt about it. But if you aren't restricted to just money, I would say go with modchips. I don't know...I just love modchips I like booting elfs and running homebrew on my PS2. Am not sure whether SwapMagic can boot elfs or bootable discs made to run .elf files. Its awesome what the SMS Player can do these days, and don't even ask me about the SNES emulation

If you aren't interested in all of that, wanna save some money, don't mind swapping discs (like cyber ), don't wanna cheat use Codebreaker/Gameshark to cheat in games, then go ahead, save some money and get yourself a DS or seomthin and get Swap Magic for your PS2

It really depends on what YOU want. Its your money

    So, to recap, Lyger.

Modchips offer the best compatibility overall.
But SwapMagic isn't far behind in compatibility, and has the advantage of needing no soldering and costing less.

So, if you have the money, and have the means to have the chip soldered, then go for the chip.
Otherwise your best bet is SwapMagic.

I apologize for that - I didn't intend to do so. I've have Swapmagic discs for quite some time myself, and they run about all games you try to play, even new releases. The compatibility is very good - with all regions. Don't worry.
