In fairness, though, the 360 didn't claim full backwards compatibility at launch. Nor did Microsoft rub their rivals' faces in the 'fact' that their console was to have full backwards compatibility. Though until Microsoft announces that Panzer Dragoon Orta is compatible with the 360, their backwards compatibility shall remain in my bad books anyway.

Still, good news indeed. Though I really hope that those 1000 games contain most of the PS2's best titles, and aren't merely the 1000 easiest to emulate. It's going to discredit Sony even more in the public eye if certain big name games aren't playable. Especially since they're waiting until the console has launched before announcing what titles make up the list.

Probably. Just how many PS2 games are there? I'd say 1000 is way more than enough.

I know, Sony was more ambitious since the begining, and that's something that brought them many costumers, PS2 was compatible with almost all the PSX games and they thought they'd do it again since it's something people apreciatted.
Now, other factors have made them reconsiderate the way they are going to offer us that compatibility, it will have downsides, of course, but it's not looking that bad as some people are making it look.
If the final result is not satisfying I'll be there to spank Sony, but till then, I can't say I'm disappointed.

Oh I certainly agree that to complain about 1000 backwards compatible titles would be folly. Regardless of my feelings towards Sony as a company, I know that I'll probably end up buying a PS3 as soon as it has a game that really interests me. So I was happy to hear this announcement, even if part of me really wants to see Sony be taught a lesson for their arrogance. 1000 games is easily enough to cover all of the PS2's top tier (and it's a big tier. The PS2 really had such a great library...) games and then some, so as long as priority is given to good games ahead of easy ones to emulate, there's nothing to worry about.

For a lot of people, backwards compatibility seems to be a fairly minor feature, but I still play plenty of PS1 games on my PS2, and will probably do the same with PS2 games if and when I buy a PS3, so... It'd be nice to be able to retire my PS2, especially since its laser is already failing (a great library of games, certainly, but not a very great console ). Not essential, certainly, but very nice. And a feature I'd actually miss if it wasn't present, or only half-functional (as opposed to Blu-Ray movies, or Bluetooth connections, or any number of other things).

I'm fairly cetain that there were tons more PS2 games than thier were PSX( 1200 ish PSX) So I'm gonna guess there's about 2000 PS2 games. This may be too high or low but I'm fairly ceretain that 1000 total PS2 releases sounds too low... Way low.

crusher said 2451 titles were released in Europe, so... When you take into account the amount of Japan-only titles, and the few that made it to America but not to Europe, you're looking at a lot more than 1000.

Still, when you consider how many of those titles are absolutely class A, and then on top of that how many are good, and then how many are...not bad...you're looking at a substantially smaller number. Still probably more than 1000, but not by enough that you're going to be missing a great deal. I think I have something like three hundred PS2 games (mostly pirates, of course), and there's not really all that many more that I'd want to get at present, so... 1000 is looking to me like a more than satisfying number, so long as it is 1000 good games, and not the biggest name titles plus a bunch of junk that was easy to emulate.

Note to all people: this --> 1,000 of 2,451 titles released in Europe isn't bad at all. <-- is a clickable link. Just in case you missed it the first time I posted it.

I suppose, but I'm guessing that they will be 50-50 the good games for serious gamers and those brain numbing things for kids.

Also, sorry bout that. I guess it's just my collectors nature. If ya put it that way then 1000 titles is more than sufficient, but to me backwards compatibility will always mean all games.

Good news keep falling in? What the hell is going on!? :O

SAN JOSE, Calif. and FOSTER CITY, Calif., March 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Immersion Corporation, (Nasdaq: IMMR - News), a leading developer and licensor of touch feedback technology, and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today announced the companies have agreed to conclude their patent litigation at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and have entered into a new business agreement to explore the inclusion of Immersion technology in PlayStation® format products.

"We are pleased to have put this litigation behind us," said Immersion CEO Victor Viegas. "Our new business agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment is specifically intended to enable advanced vibration capability for the benefit of the PlayStation gaming community. We are happy to provide our technology in this regard and hope to make technical proposals very soon with respect to use of our technology in the PlayStation products."

Immersion will receive the amount of the judgment entered by the District Court, which includes damages, pre-judgment interest, costs, and interest, in addition to retaining compulsory license fees ordered by the District Court which were already paid. Terms of the business agreement between the parties provide SCE with certain new rights with respect to Immersion's patent portfolio. Additional financial terms are not being disclosed. The conclusion of this litigation and the agreement will have no material impact on Sony's consolidated earnings forecast announced on January 30, 2007.

"We look forward to exploring with Immersion exciting new ways to bring the largest and best range of gameplay experiences to our customers," said Kazuo Hirai, President and Group Chief Operating Officer, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "We are very excited about our new partnership with Immersion and the potential for new and innovative products incorporating their technologies."

Who wants to bet that now they'll have no difficulty overcoming the 'problems' they had with vibration interfering with the SixAxis controller?

Good news, though, even if I never cared much for vibration.

I rather not bet against that.

Neither did I. The only games that really make good use of it (in my opinion) is the MGS games.

Woot. Now I gotta go rebuy some controllers. It'll be worth it though.

The six axis is nowhere near sensitive enough that it'd cause problem with typical vibration, at least from what I've been doing with it thus far.

Unless they're putting something 100x more powerful than the PS2 controller.

So I'd expect to see a fully functional sixaxis with vibration within a month.

*cough* I bet girl gamers everywhere are suddenly planning to buy PS3's *cough*
