Continuing from Lyger's thread: You should really check out Manowar, especially if you like Judas Priest. They're pretty much my favorite plain heavy metal band, I prefer them over Priest, Maiden, and Black Sabbath. Also, don't forget to check out Dio and Motrhead!

Edit: Lag, it took me a while to get to like Death, simply because half of their albums aren't really death metal. Their early stuff like Scream Bloody Gore, Leprosy, and Human are more oldschool DM, while the ones after like Individual Thought Patterns(one of my fav's), Symbolic, and Sound of Perserverance are prog./technical (death) thrash.

Anyone who likes Death's "Individual Thought Patterns" and subsequent albums will looove Atheist, as well as Morbid Angel's 2nd album "Blessed Are the Sick". Oldschool death metal is so god damned great.

Edit2: Later Death albums also are more melodic, so younger melo death folk won't have a tough time getting into it. Check out the song/video for "Lack of Comprehension" and "The Philosopher". Earlier albums are more in the vein of Possessed.

Try Machine Men.... they are a pretty awesome band. Just think of Iron Maiden except that the vocalist sounds a tiny tiny tiny bit different than Bruce.

Lyger, if you ever get into Iron Maiden alot, then check of Three Inches of Blood They're like a speedy version of Iron Maiden on crack Then hopefully from liking them, you'll get into power and death metal.

    +1

Blind Guardian. Fo' Shizzle. Though now I sort of listen to mostly the older stuff which is straight up speed metal, cuz modern BG rules but can get a little too cheesy for me at times.

Manowar, Dio, Motrhead, Thin Lizzy, early Pantera, W.A.S.P., Ozzy Osbourne... a lot of that is very accessible for most people, and of course they still fucking rule.

Found the strangest thing, you wouldn't expect it to be played on a black metal themed station.

Norwegian Black Metal Crosses The Line
Let's be honest, most metal is basically pantomime. Blokes in makeup spewing fake blood and growling lyrics about worshipping satan is about as scary as a Coronation Street Halloween special. They do things differently in Norway though, where some 60 church fires since 1992 have been attributed to the black metal scene.

Leaders of the pack must surely be Mayhem. Among the many grisly events associated with the band, the suicide of appropriately-named vocalist Dead and the subsequent eating of his brain by fellow bandmate Euronymous (pictured) ranks among the highlights. Oh yes, and the charming cannibal himself was later murdered by a member of a rival band, allegedly because he had a more evil reputation. Nice one, chaps.
