    Default Burner Trouble

Hey, recently I've been having trouble with my burner. It doesn't seem to recognize blank CD-Rs (DVD-Rs work fine, though). DVD Decryptor gives me an error saying "Device Not Ready (Medium Not Present- Tray Closed)"

I think it may have been caused when I tried to insert a Dreamcast GD-ROM (of Crazy Taxi, if it helps) into my drive, to see if I could extract it that way somehow. I couldn't. Anyway, is there any way I could fix this?

Am having the same problem with my Sony CD burner but its been with me for more than 2 and 1/2 years now, and when I told my hardware guy to get it repaired, he said its life is over. Do not waste money on it as the chances of it getting repaired are scarce. My CD burner won't "catch" blank CDs anymore It detects CDrws but no CDr's. At first, I thought the lens caught dust or somethin and I went out and bought a CD lens cleaning kit and cleaned my burner's lens. After that it detected 5 to 6 blank discs and even burned em properly but now its again having the same problems. I think its okay. Its life is almost over Time to buy a DVD burner. Am thinking of getting this one...

And so you go with yet another sony burner. There are plenty of great burners on newegg.com, read up on some reviews

Before doing that it would be an idea to try a fresh install of windows on the chance it's just messed up on the driver end of things.

Also could just be bad batch of CD-R's unless you have tried others aswell

i was having a simliar problem but the funny thing is that when i updated the driver, the hardware disappeared from the system all together...when i deleted the driver, the hardware now works perfectly, and is even recognized by windows device manager, but every time i boot up the first thing windows does is tell me my pioneer dvd rw needs a driver so i always click cancel and it says i might have some problems with it...but thats prolly not the best solution for you guys

    That's your answer for everything.

On Topic: First you should seek down the most recent firmware and/or driver from the manufacturer's website, and flash the drive, and see if this fixes any problems.
If it doesn't fix it, them try it in another person's PC, or reinstall windows.

If it's still acting up, find a creative way to dispose of it.

Fresh install of Windows? Er... Anything but that route. I already tried reinstalling Windows once, and I sure as hell don't want to go through it again. I've had my 16x DVD-RW burner for about 8 months, so I really don't think it would be at the end of its life already. I'll try and find out what brand it is, so I can get the proper drivers for it. As for my CDs, they're the only CDs I've ever worked with (Philips 52x CD-Rs, I still haven't worn through my initial batch of 100), and they've never failed me.

You can reinstall without formating if you use XP or 2K it would be a second install so everything would else would still be there just make sure you are not installing to the exact same directory e.g. so instead of installing to C: \Windows\ you can install it to C: \Win2ndcopy\

You could just use that for testing.

I can go through getting rid of that 2nd install if needs be afterwards

Yup...always a good idea. But I'll have to hunt down that particular drive in my area coz online shopping is not for me. Also, shipping to India could prove COSTLIER than the actual cost of the orignial hardware

I had a problem with my CD Burner one time where Windows98 wouldn't recognize it.
After trying everything I could think of: reinstalling drivers, reinstalling Nero, reinstalling Windows98, etc. I finally solved the problem.

First, I shut down and unplugged my computer, then opened it up.
I then unplugged both of my CD drives; pulled out the plug with the multi-colored wires, and also the flat cable (think it's called the IDE cable)

Then I closed up my comp, plugged it back in and started it with both of my CD drives unplugged.

Then I shut down my comp again, unplugged it and opened it up to plug back in both of my CD drives.
Then I restarted it again and Windows finally recognized my CD Burner again.

(yes, Windows, at times, is ghey)

I prefer to think of it as "bisexual". I'll try that out, and see if it works.

I'd go with NEC or Pioneer, or if you're a rich bitch, Plextor. Be warned though, before I had a Plextor and it died in a year, but it was well over 1000 copies...

Got it. I'll do some R&D on those drives and check em out and see if they are available in the local markets here. Thanx for the info

    Edit: Oh and I ain't a rich bitch....yet

Update on burner issues: I'm trying a different brand of CD-Rs, and it seems to be recognizing the discs. I haven't tried burning... yet. Pray for the best.
