All I can recommend is don't start with Damnation unless you're REALLY patient Start with Still Life, Deliverance, Blackwater Park, Morningrise, Orchid, or Ghost Reveries

Even the heavy parts are just a riff being repeated over and over again for a good 2 minutes. And (not that I really care) they don't solo as cool as they used to on their first 2 albums. On their first 2 albums the soft parts seemed to mix in wonderfully. Now they're just thrown in because they can do them and drag them out quite a bit.

Morningrise is my favorite. It only has 5 songs but all those songs are kickass. Advent has the most awesome middle acoustic break and outro. The Night And The Silent Water is great just as well. I don't understand why the band dislikes this song. Nectar is fantastic. Black Rose Immortal is boring on many parts because it's a 20 minute long song with no stable foundation in it whatsoever. The outro is nice though. And the album ends with the beautiful To Bid You Farewell. Starts out nice and soft and slowly progresses into a heavy track. Well done.

The remastered version contains a demo track called Eternal Soul Torture. A good track if you can get past the bad sound quality. It also has some parts of Advent in it...

EDIT - BTW, Theo awesome avatar. NO DIVING IN THE POOL!
It's ok I kid I have a great love for Opeth, I always seem to go back to it. Recently I haven't listened to any other stuff (Though I'm glad the giffard has this new jukebox, cos it lets you download tracks to play , Seeing choices between Opeth, CoB, Dragonforce, Vader, cannibal Corpse ) but yeah, I love this Death metal night, though the guy plays a lot of "mainstream" stuff, which I know the hardcore metalheads don't like (Soeru ) The guy plays a lot of Cradle of Filth, though it tends to get people out of their seats. Though I think I am becoming more partial to it

Start with My Arms, Your Hearse.

Its one of the heavier Opeth albums, and has slightly shorter songs. By slightly shorter, i mean that it averages around 6 or so minutes per song, rather than the 8-9 average for most of their albums.

That, and it has Demon of the Fall, which is probably their best song, and doesnt head as far into the acoustics as Opeth usually does so its easier to get into.

Lol. Listen to some Manowar... it's old fashioned heavy metal about... being metal. Seriously, I love Manowar, I wonder what their next album is going to be like. Their single might only be a small taste of the next CD's awesomeness, they might've just put that meh-ish song on there to keep fans happy. Erik Adams' voice is still fucking powerful, just makes you wanna go rush for that sword and armor and fight! He doesn't do the high pitched stuff so much anymore, he's quite old and probably just can't do it much, but I don't mind since his clean vocals are already amazing and convincing. He's probably my favorite metal singer, I like his voice more than Dickinson or Halford to be honest.

The new CC album tracklist... lol, sure sounds like CC. They're cool and all but I wish they had a little more variety in their CD's.

The lady over at InstrumentExchange.com was kind enough to pimp me the Fedex 2-day shipping for my new guitar for free! It ships today. Joy. I probably have to buy a whammy bar and a locking nut though, as I think the seller doesn't have those parts but oh well. I'll post some pics when I get it.

So by tonight I should have the entire discographies of Opeth and Zao.

    Rock.

(Yes, Zao is a Christian band. That doesn't stop me from thinking that they're unbelievably awesome.)

Hey, I used to like P.O.D.(a Christian nu metal band). But then I found my religious awakening with Deicide.

I got some stuff recently... not all of which was metal. I got D.R.I's(hardcore punk/thrash) discography as I've heard good things about them. I also got Aus Rotten, a very heavy and thrashy crust punk band's discography. Also got Nebelhorn and Skyforger's albums(both viking metal bands). Cool shit.

I'm starting to like this oi and crust punk phenomenon, my bro has some old tapes with that kind of music on them. The scene is pretty dead but it's cool to hear all the non-metal bands that influenced bands like Slayer, Bathory, Venom, Motorhead, Metallica, Megadeth, Kreator, and tons of other oldschool acts. Crust punk and thrash metal share so much in common it's unbelievable.

I've been listening to a lot of Death and Atheist nowadays. I love their technicality man, it's so different from plain death metal but not over-the-top like modern tech. DM, like say Necrophagist, Deeds of Flesh or Decrepit Birth. I've heard of Cynic and Crionics, are they anything like these 2 bands? Anyone know any other oldschool DM bands like Atheist and Death?

Edit: Speaking of Death, today marks the 4th anniversary since Chuck Sculdiner's death. R.I.P.

It's already been 4 years since Chuck died? Wow, time flies. It doesn't seem that long ago...

Anyway, here lately I've been listening to.....well, a lot of Japanese music. But that's not what this post is about. I've also been listening to a lot of "techno-goth-metal" music. Bands like Psyclon Nine, Project Pitchfork (who Rammstein used to open for back when they first started performing), and Gothminster. Pretty good (good = different) stuff. Of course, I'm into all that industrial type stuff. So yeah.

I tend to like industrial metal sometimes, you might like solitary experiments and/or VNV nation.
