I have all my music on my comp right now, and even if I throw it all on a 60GB it wouldn't fit, so a copy will remain on my comp regardless. And if I lose it... hell no, I'm strapping that thing to my balls.

I need to check out Bolt Thrower...

Yeah, Bolt Thrower is pretty good, I think, but not what I was expecting. The review said it was one of the best metal albums of the year, so I got it. Good, but not that great.

I'd strap mine to my balls too.

Been listening to At The Heart of Winter as well. Withstand The Fall of Time is a great song. Immortal are like black metal with leads

Anyone listen to the thrash band Whiplash? It's one of the many underrated (read: hardly known) thrash bands that emerged in the mid to late 80s. I highly recommend their shit. Insult to Injury is perhaps their finest album, and a fine slab of thrash metal. Heathen/Anthrax fans should love them.

    Yes! They kick ass!

We like it faster than lightning,
We'll have it no other way.
So fast that it can be frightening,
    Thrashing out day after day.

^ Just a favorite excerpt from their song "Thrash til Death"(not a cover) from the Thrashback album. They're a very underexposed band(particularily cuz they played 80's-style thrash throughout the 90's, but the still deserved more attention). I like Insult to Injury but I need to give that one a few more listens. Indeed, they were huge Anthrax and "Kill Em All" Metallica worshipers, a shame their frontman died and they split up. They're from New Jersey, apparently this state had a bunch of great underground thrash bands that all seem to be split up(like Ripping Corpse, Erik Rutan from HE played with them before going on with Morbid Angel and later HE, so he's really from NJ).

If you like Whiplash, you'll love Nuclear Assault and Rigor Mortis. They sound a bit like Destruction too, which btw, is a band I should be getting into.

I really like Sodom, but I have some more listening to do. I'm really loving "Persecution Mania". Kreator is my fav. German thrash band right now but that might be subject to change.

I saw this documentary on thrash metal the other day, talking about the origins of the scene. They interviewed Kreator, Anthrax, Metallica, Sepultura, Testament and some others. Cool documentary... got it off of emule.

For you fans of oldschool DM(like Obituary and shit), check out Entombed's first 2 CD's. That stuff is so damned awesome man... It's got a hint of Swedish style melody like Gothenburg bands, but they're as brutal as Dismember(and Intestine Baalism, damn I haven't listened to them in a while).

Btw I just can't stop loving early Sepultura... they used to be just so damned great. Even though it's very oldschool death/thrash it still doesn't lack a "wow-factor", at least in my opinion. And this is coming from someone who likes Wormed, Decrepit Birth, and Suffocation. Early Sepultura and Deicide sound almost alike.

I'm wondering if any of you could reccomend some good slower or mid-paced black metal bands. I'm looking for stuff that sounds like Mayhem's first CD "De Misteriis Dom Sathanas". Any good ideas? Just something deeply evil, atmospheric but without synthesizers, and not blistering fast like Immortal's Pure Holocaust" or something. The first Immortal CD "Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism" is kind of what I'm looking for too. Also think of that Dies Irae(a Vader side-project DM band) song called "The Lion of Knowledge", which is slow paced, has those really distorted guitars playing some slow chords, and a whole lot of evil grim BM style atmosphere.

Do any of you still listen to Deicide? I had completely forgotten about them until a few days ago. God damn how I love their self-titled and "Legion", amongst a bunch of random songs throughout their career. I seriously forgot how heavy they are, I was almost disturbed when I heard some song from "In Torment in Hell" that I hadn't heard before. Deicide have a lot of crappy albums but a bunch of really good songs scattered around in them, they could've been a really cool band if they just weren't so damned lazy.

Edit: We should make a seperate thread for the following idea: post your favorite album, song, and/or band by subgenre, and a poll for what your favorite subgenre is. Cool idea?

Edit2: I just checked out Akercocke for the first time(the new CD), and damn... I like this so far. I never knew how blackened death metal would sound with clean vocals. Very different and unique. And they know how to dress too!

I'm not much of a trash fan, but I do listen to a few bands like Kreator, Exodus, and all the obvious ones like Pantera and Slayer. But I haven't heard those two for like, two years.

I still like Deicide, and yeah, haha, alot of their albums are shite, but they do have random great songs. One of my favourites of theirs also is This Hell We're In... I think that's the name of it... well, it's the 4th track from Serpents, and it's so awesome. Deicide does seem lazy
I read when I first got into Deicide that Glen Benton was gonna commit suicide at age 33 just to mock Jesus, but he ended up not doing it, the bastard! Well, yeah, they're cool.

And I'm listening to Cryhavoc's two albums right now. Fuck, this is surprisingly awesome. Get this band's material, everybody! Some of the best melo-death I've heard in a long time!

And Akercocke's new album... I absolutely love the 1st, 4th, and 9th tracks. The 9th track, The Penance, was stuck in my head ALL weekend until I heard it finally. Just that last part with that awesome riffing going on that starts about 4 minutes through the song gets stuck in my head forever.

And that thread idea of yours, Soeru, isn't bad. We should do one.

Nuclear Assault fucking rule. I need to get more of their albums. The only album I have now is Game Over, and what a fine album it is. I can't say the same for Destruction. I still need to listen more to them to fully appreciate them.

Get Drudkh's The Swan Road. You have fine bare-boned grim black metal here. No keyboards or any modern influece, just carefully written and basic black metal. Kampfar are also a great bare-boned black metal band, but they dwindle around with song structure and progression, so it might not be what you're looking for. Grab their 1997 release: Mellom Skogkledde Aaser if you're interested.

Nah I think you read it wrong, Benton wasn't going to commit suicide, he just kept saying he was the type of guy that's gonna die at age 33. Funny thing is he had a mild motorcycle accident at that age.

Yeah, Game Over is my favorite NA album, but their 2nd or 3rd(the one with a nuclear power plant on the cover) is pretty cool too. I'll be sure to check those bands out. I was actually hoping for oldschool well-known bands that I've never listened to before, but w/e. Gorgoroth is a great band btw.

Ahriman (Hungary). They only have two albums but they are really good, the albums might be a bit hard to find. Deathspell Omega's "Knse" is pretty amazing, check them out when you have a chance

Listening to Nanowar right now. They aren't as funny as the reviews made them up to be. I was expecting some good songs too (not the lyrics, at least the music) , but the music isn't good at all either. They're better than most bands of their genre, though. The metal-satire-type, I guess, is their genre

    Sure will.

I've been listening to those Immortal live bootlegs, damn they're cool especially the Plagues of Evil bootleg. You should listen to what Abbath sais before playing "Unholy Forces of Evil", it's hilarious with his accent on top of his grim troll-like voice. "This one's.... old. From our debut... Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism. Unholy forces of ebil!", cracks me up every time. In the midst of the song he sais it's the first Immortal show in the US ever, and he wanted to celebrate it with fire breathing, but he was not allowed.

That sucks... fire-breathing should be allowed at every black metal concert...

Currently listening to Solfald's 2005 release: Red For Fire: An Icelandic Odyssey Part 1. Now this is some cool shit. The last two albums where experimental black metal, but this just rules. Progressive viking metal? That's the closest to it. Labels aside, this is excellent music, and is going to rank pretty high on my top 2005 releases. Recommended.

Will check it out. Thanks. I love all your recommendations, btw.

Currently listening to Dream Theater's Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence. I keep getting more and more attached to DT since I started getting into them last month. This is a huge album, btw
