Hard to explain, but let's put it this way: they're a band that fuses elements taken from hardcore (ie. aggressive vocals, heavy chunks of distortion), goregrind (ie. blast beats, gore imagery), and modern rock. They're not metal, and they're certainly not plain hard rock either.

As a matter of fact, Slipknot are singing punk rock now. Watch the video for "Before I forget"... cha-ching, anybody? Sounds just like those MCR bastards. They've always been about making $, much like all other "Nu metal" bands, therefore they are faaaaaaaaaaaaaar from being a real metal band.

Old school metal isn't all poofy hair and glam stuff... the earliest early-mid 80's death, black, thrash, and speed metal bands could efforlessly mop the floor with KoRn's and Slipknot's dreadlocks. Soooo many old bands are unimaginably heavier than the likes of Slipknot...

Go listen to some 1980's Sepultura, 80's Metallica/Megadeth, Death, Terrorizer, Napalm Death, early Bathory, Entombed, Dismember, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Deicide, ... Your opinion of Slipknot being "OMFG so fuCkin xTr333m3!" will change within seconds. Give those bands a shot, take the step from watered-down pop metal to the real shit, you won't regret it. And we'll always be around to give some reccomendations if you decide to actually listen to some of that stuff.

I've noticed that most true metalheads simply detest mallcore/pop metal kids, but they never even bother to give them a tape with some good stuff on it so they can "convert" them if they get to like it. Don't condemn people who listen to "untrue" metal, get them into some real metal bands!

If it makes you feel any better, I listened to(and liked) Slipknot's first album, and Limp Bizkit's first 2. Then I discovered Manowar, Hammerfall, an assload of power metal bands, got into In Flames, and then a friend got me into Decapitated, Deicide, and Marduk. You can imagine how swift the transition was.

Instead of going straight on to heavier bands maybe first you should get a taste of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Sodom, Anthrax and Slayer. Then some heavier melodic stuff like In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, etc. and you'll get into ub3r br00t3l death metal soon enough.

Edit: Got my guitar on my lap and I'm trying to figure out that Hate Eternal song... confusing as hell.

Your a fuckin idiot...I listen to all those bands, Plus better shit like Cannible Corspe, Gwar, Ect...Im just sayin Slipknot is the best metal band to hit the scene within the last 10 years. Since they been out since 95'. But yea there new cd is a load of fuckin crap. There next cd better be metal again like Iowa that cd is dope as fuck. But yea if its another piece of garbage cd I will stop supporting them...And Korn? LOL dont even get me started on those faggots...

This situation actually reminds me of something I actually thought of one day. It's basically an outline explaining why playing in a Nu metal/modern hard rock band is a prosperous industry. I'll use Slipknot as the "catalyst":

Angsty kid listens to Slipknot -> Kid "breaks shit up" around the house. -> Parents severly punish the kid for his wankery. -> Kid becomes more angsty. -> Kid buys more Nu metal CD's.

Excellent marketing scheme, wouldn't you say?

I still want to give some reccomendations to RyBu if only he had the decency to apologize, but he hates everybody so I guess that's not going to happen.


Back onto metal:

Does anyone here like Dismember? Very oldschool Swedish DM without being completely melodic. I love early 90's DM for its simplicity, heaviness, and most importantly: vibe. There's nothing quite like Obituary's "Cause of Death", Entombed's "Clandestine", or Dismember's "Death Metal". It's incredible just how badly metalcore/hardcore bands have ripped off the Swedish death metal sound. It just makes everything sound so oversaturated and similar. I understand why modern DM fans simply fear "Gothencore" bands, but it doesn't mean that the bands they were ripping off suck...

I also think the 80's had some very scarce but extremely good DM bands. Possessed anyone? Is anyone a big fan of their first album "Seven Churches"? I've been listening it to a bit recently and it's very cool, and in a 1985 context it would be the most evil shit ever done. A bit annoying and "underworked" at first, especially for young dudes like me, but I can appreciate it despite its "childness". I need to check out the rest of their stuff. They sound like early Morbid Angel, Death, Rigor Mortis, 80's demo-era Cannibal Corpse, amongst others, but they're actually way older than than any of those bands, which makes them so... impressive.

Speaking of Rigor Mortis, the bastards are getting back together. Can't wait to see what they'll be doing, as well as Terrorizer. These oldschool bands need to resurface and show the kids where it started, oldschool extreme metal deserves more attention.

Venom is like... wow, quickly becoming my favorite BM band. I like them more than most 2nd wave and 3rd wave of BM bands, not more than Immortal or Bathory but you know. It's not just the Motorhead-style of playing, it's their attitude man, you can't get any more black metal than Venom. They do -however- suck at their instruments, but they put the signature BM feel across with a grungy type sound, almost makes me want to bust out my leather and bullet belt.

To all fans of alternative rock reading this: check out Venom and Bathory, I don't think there's any reason why you shouldn't appreciate it.
