"I Monarch" was cool, it just takes time getting into. It may not be innovative but I think it's very pure and full of soul, it has the essence and vibe of oldschool metal. Plus a bit of technicality like modern DM but not all that much. I remember when they played "Behold Judas" live that song got stuck in my head for weeks until I actually listened to the album. I shook Erik's hand on stage btw.

I still think "King of All Kings" was better, but Erik Rutan sais that the new one is more "focused", less technical but a more accurate representation of his musicmanship. So basically the approach to writing was more straight forward as opposed to well-thought out stuff, which in essence that's what death metal is: complete liberty over music, but a lot of modern tech DM listeners might think it's crap.

I haven't listened to the first one a lot yet, but it sounds to me an aweful lot like Cannibal Corpse? Weird, must be cuz the bassplayer they had at the time(CC's bassplayer) was more into writing the music?

The earliest of Rutan's work can be heard in a demo/rehearsal tape from '92 from the band Ripping Corpse, just before he joined Morbid Angel. You can tell it's him, and why Morbid took him in as a 2nd guitarist. I think he(and Schuldiner from Death) is one of the first DM guitarists that gave DM leads that "egyptian" feel which is common in DM nowadays(modern Morbid Angel, Nile, Behemoth, Zyklon)since he uses those sorts of scales in the solos.

Btw, did any of you guitarists know that Chuck Schuldiner from Death NEVER knew music theory? He just came up with whatever he felt like playing. Unbelievable. So yeah, fuck lessons or something.

However, Vogg from Decapitated still remains as my guitar idol. Btw, I have my guitar in C# cuz I'm learning HE's "Powers that Be". Also going to play/figure out some more of Behemoth's "Demigod" cuz it uses that tuning.

King of all Kings was amazing too. I love how HE plays an old-ish style of DM, but way faster and better.
There was a thread on KT about the HE music video for I, Monarch a while ago. It was about how ugly the bassist from HE was, haha. I don't really see anything wrong with him, but the comments were good, I guess.

About the 'egyptian' feel of some bands nowadays have, every one of those you mentioned I love, but who doesn't love those? And I don't like lessons either. It's good to be able to say you've never taken a single lesson and that you're amazing on a drumkit... although only like 5 people know I play, and I'm not very good. So scratch that last comment.

I've only heard Sounds of Perseverance from Death, also. Man, there's alot of music I need to catch up on... ie Death, Bathory, Immortal, Emperor, Morbid Angel, and Mercyful Hate are all bands I barely have anything by, or have lots but haven't listened to yet.

You're learning Powers That Be also? Isn't that the last track on I, Monarch? The way more relaxing song? If so, that's just awesome.

Well I think for drums/percussion you simply need to know some theory, at least know the difference between 8th notes and 16th notes and know your timings. The rest is setting up your kit and just practicing like a mofo. From a general point of view, I think drums are limited 'cause you can't play melodies, but they take a lot more endurance, coordination and concentration to play than any other instrument. I can play some very nice sounding stuff on guitar but if I can't keep it together with good timing it doesn't sound good.

Mercyful Fate*. A huge influence on Morbid Angel, btw.

Man, I was in your position not too long ago, I stopped checking out new bands for a while and just concentrated on what was already out there. And I still have a long way to go, but I'm happy that I've learned to love so many oldschool acts already. Last year I was listening to stuff like Decapitated and Arsis and I was like: "Whoa who's Morbid Angel/Death/Deicide/Suffocation/Terrorizer/Entombed/Sepultura/Venom/Bathory/Testament/etc. ?" I also knew the names of bands like Slayer but I didn't get into them until my oldschool obsession occured. It's just a matter of catching up.

I've only listened to Death's "Scream Bloody Gore" "Leprosy" and "Symbolic" a lot, still need to check out the rest. There's always something to check out, be it new or old. I go in both directions nowadays, but for new stuff I usually rely on reviews beforehand.

"Powers That Be" is the last track on King of All Kings, there's a video for it. And to my knowledge it's not relaxing in any way. It's not as fast as the others, but it's still heavy as fuck and has somewhat of a melody. I'm also learning that one with insanely layered guitar riffs called "Servants to the Gods", also from KoaK.

Immortal = my favorite black metal band. Thing is I don't even consider them to be black metal, but whatever, one of my favorite bands of all genres. They got better musically with every album, but they still remained the same, just better with their instruments and songwriting capabilities.

I feel ashamed at times that I got into bands after they split up or became crap. Like... how didn't I get into Bathory and Immortal sooner? It's not fair.

I don't listen to Venom, because they just don't look good from what I've heard from them (two songs though). Testament also, I have to get into them. Oh! AND, I hear Nevermore is a very great metal band. I only have Dreaming Neon Black, which, from reviews, is one of their worst albums. I should just get more Nevermore, since they seem to be very great from what I've read.

And Slayer was (how typical) the first metal band I started listening to, other than iron Maiden and Hatebreed, even though Hatebreed are more 'hardcore' than the other two. I listened to Slayer for about half a year, then I eventually came across CoF's cover of Hell Awaits. Predictably, that lead on to me getting into CoF, and from there-Dimmu Borgir and Zyklon. The a friend told me about Lamb of God, and I randomly downloaded Behemoth's Zos Kia Cultus. I listened to that album almost everyday for like, 3 months, I swear. You can imagine, though, since it's so brutal compared to CoF and other bands like that. Zos Kia Cultus is probably my most-heard album ever in my life. I have heard it so many times it's amazing. And I'm still in love with it. It got me into metal.
    Well, enough about all that.

Ayreon kicks ass, especially The Human Equation and Into The Electric Castle. I like the debut too, but it's a bit too short compared to their other albums.

Howie, have you heard and rated Akercocke's new album yet? I give it a great 9/10. What's Galloglass like aswell? Never heard of them...

Yes! I finally got DT's Exposures: In Retrospect & Denial! I've been trying to get this for a few months. But meh, not exciting news to anybody else.

I'm listening through it for the fourth time now, but it still doesn't do much for me. It's not bad though, Verdelet is an excellent song.

Galloglass' newest is a mix of both good and bad, mostly good though. "After Forever" and "Dawn Of A New Age" are excellent tracks.

edit: Scratch bad, the worst song is decent, so it is quite good. Check it out if you like Power Metal.

I love Anata. "Under A Stone With No Inscription" is a major sweet album. They can play death metal with melody without being melo-death
