Holy fuck. Next year looks very promising... There's gonna be a new Cannibal Corpse record later this year btw, but I don't think many of you are interested(me neither, really). Krisiun are also up to something for next year, the guitarist claims that they're doing something different, in an interview he described as "groovy" and referred to Morbid Angel and Sodom. Speaking of which, I've recently gotten into Sodom quite a bit. "Nuclear Winter" is so damned cool.

Does anyone listen to Thyrfing? I've heard good things about them but I'm not sure what they're like, grabbing their disco, I expect something like Bathory or Vintersorg.

What are Edge of Sanity and Lake of Tears like? I saw them in a Black Mark catalogue I got in the mail... I assume since it's the same label that Bathory was on, they must kick ass.

Btw, Howie could you reccomend some more bands like viking-era Bathory? I know a couple of viking metal bands like Winds, Windir, Borknagar, Vintersorg, etc. but I'm looking for something less on the black metal side, just epic as fuck stuff. Preferably stuff with English lyrics.

I've recently noticed than I can play just about any Amon Amarth riff that comes to mind. Soon I'm tuning back to Bb again and I'll learn all of the songs that I fancy. I already know "Death in Fire", "Versus the World", "Bloodshed", "Fate of Norns", "Pursuit of Vikings", most of "1000 Years of Oppression", "Victorious March" and "The Sound of Eight Hooves". Their riffs are very similar yet the songs sound so completely different. The bastards sure know how to write good stuff.

Nice! I loved last album, so I got my hopes up for this one.

All I can think of now is Falkenbach, but I haven't listened much to those anyway. I'll edit once I remember some.

Thyrfing are less epic than Bathory and more 'in your face'. I would compare to the likes of Ensiferum and Forefather. Start with Urkraft to get an idea of their sound.

The one man band Howie mentioned; Falkenbach, is epic as fuck. Their latest album is the most epic but least heavy. The old material leans more towards the generic black metal approach though. Gjallarhorn are a Bathory worship band (their sole release is a tribute to Bathory in fact). I highly recommend it. You can read the review I wrote in the Music Appreciation thread. Primordial bares a few nods to Bathory as well, what with the epic and dragged song structures, and their vocalist is a whole lot better than Quorthon (you also might enjoy Void of Silence if you liked Primordial). I might edit later if I remember some.

Time for a recommendation; Disillusion - Back To The Times Of Splendor. I almost forgot how great the title-track on this album was.

Soeru will totally bash me for this...
I'm listening to Morbid Angel's Altars of Madness for the very first time.
Awesome stuff though. I'm a bit surprised drummers (Sandoval in this case) were that good back in the 80's and early 90's. This is like, THE death metal album, though. Not my favourite, but when I say THE death metal album, I think I mean it was the first great deth metal album ever made (I think). I don't know if you agree or not.
I have the remix/bonus album, though. With three bonus tracks with remixes of the songs Maze of Torment, Chapel of Ghouls, and Blasphemy. I'm about 5/8 through the album though, so I still have to hear these remixes.

And who's heard that Roadrunner All Stars United disc? They get a bunch of the best individual band members from lots of the record labels artists and get them to play together in songs they made. That shitty Joey drummer from slipknot (I didn't capitalize slipknot on purpose, cause they don't deserve it and SUCK! You heard me... ) plays in like half the cd's songs though, which kind of, but not really, pisses me off. But what can I do... it's a great cd anyways. Lots of good songs.

Not that Slipknot is my favourite band or anything, but Joey is a great drummer in my opinion. I've seen quite a lot of videos of him, impressive shit.

    Getting it.

and about Joey. He is good, I'll admit, but just because he's in slipknot, it forces me to dislike him. It's something I can't control!

So if he left Slipknot, would you like him more?

Nah, not really. He does havent skill for the drumset, though. That's about all I think of him, I guess. He played pretty good for Roadrunner All Star cd, too.

edit: not nearly as good as me though

Why would I bash you for it? I'm glad you like Altars of Madness. Watch how it'll grow on you... Yeah, the drumming is still very impressive, imagine how groundbreaking that must've been in 1989. Sandoval is one of the fastest and most respected drummers out there, Dave Lombardo(Slayer) would be proud(and worried that one of his fans can totally kick his ass ).

The remixes are the exact same recording except for the solos, those were changed. Some are better than the old solos, but the redone solo on Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost is one I didn't like, it killed the mood of the song I think...

Disillusion... I downloaded "Three Neuron Kings" ages ago but I forgot who they were. No idea what they sound like, but I'm grabbing that album.

Where did Sandoval get his drumming lessons as a youngster? :eyeball: I should go there. I'm self taught though. The only lessons I got were from watching the odd live video of some bands and hearing only audio tracks of songs.

edit: I should get more into 1349. That drummer... Frost I think his stage name is... is awesome. Insanely fast.
