well now I remember why I never finished FF9 it's because of the stupid ass card game and how it's forced as part of the story.

Going through the game again myself. You can largely ignore it though. It's only forced on you twice I think. Beginning with Vivi and the card tournement in Treno which you can just lose if you want, all you get is a rebirth ring which can be found in one of the chocograph chests and can also be synthed.

treno on disc 3 is the only place where the card game is forced. you can start collecting cards in the beginning with vivi. I found a GS code last night that works for winning card games though I didn't really need it to win the first round of the tournament I nearly got a perfect(or maybe I did I don't remember now) it really just boiled down to luck. my 2 best cards aren't that good but I wasn't about to spend hours resetting the game to get really good ones.

the PS button layout is the only one I even like and feel comfortable using anymore but find controllers with decent-good D-pads and hand grips is tough most are just DS3 clones. I'm currently looking at buying a pair of steelseries controllers seeing as the brand I had been using is no longer available.
the classic pro controller I was looking at doesn't have a usb connector like I thought it did so I won't be getting that one if I had an adapter or can get one for cheap($5-$10) I would get it

I use a 360 controller or one of the Logitech Dual Action (dualchalk clone with a better d-pad more or less) in the rare instances I need a controller.

Oh couldn't remember if the tutorial was forced on Vivi or not at the beginning. The card game is completely useless in 9. It was more fun in 8 - just the mechanics of it. Plus it actually factored into the actual gameplay like being able to mod cards into items for spells or parts for creating your weapons etc..

no wonder I always had trouble getting weapon parts and upgrading them. I might have to give 8 another go.

I saw PSN was down, I guess its back up. It didn't really affect me at all, I usually play single player games and I prefer physical media over digital. Emulation and retro games FTW!
