There's no significant risk, it's just a firmware update with some verified OFW. Plus if you're on 8.xx you're going to need a firmware update regardless

Exploits for 5.05 and 9.00 are the most stable and reliable.
I have both and never seen any kernal panics. 9.00 is just as good as 5.05 imo, only thing is that triggering the exploit isn't as simple as 5.05.
Fat is 5.05 and Pro is 9.00.
Any exploit in-between those can have issues. Either kernal panics, exploit failed to trigger or just simple backport issues for specific games.

Yeah updating PS4 OFW is just as simple as PS3. Grab 9.00 from a reliable source and check crc.
