I hope to get a 10TB or so HDD at some point. Gotta store all those games.

I plan on swapping larger drives into my NAS (2x2TB at the moment) at some point. It's been put off since I don't have an immediate need and prices are only recently recovering.

Drives work but the card doesn't support spin-down so I'll have to uninstall, modify, and then reinstall the driver .

Looks relatively simple since it's only a single line in the INF. I'm hoping it'll be able to enter and resume from sleep after that but only spinning down would be better than nothing.

Does the media player need a specific partition type?

surprisingly yes it does. I just looked through the manual and apparently it doesn't support large capacity external hdds without external power supplies.

That isn't unusual in my experience, like for cheap Chinese media players. I have 2 currently that boot coreelec instead of the factory shitty os.
Here's what you can do: use usb y cable (splitter with dedicated power line)) and usb power adapter (just any shitty rubbish should do, 1A or more). Some usb cd/dvd burners need that setup too.

You could of course try to use 2 usb ports on the media player if they're there but I just use a dedicated power source instead. Stops the player from being loaded up power wise.

I was actually thinking about that I think I might still have a y usb cable sitting around but my player only has 1 usb port. the more i think about this thing the more I'm tempted to replace it with something better.

The player only needs 1 port for data.

The y cable has 1 male usb at one end, this plugs into the player.
Coming out from that male plug but heading away is a power only cable that leads to another male plug (plug this into a usb mains power adapter, if this cable run is short then use usb male to female extension).
The other part of the split is power and data ending in a female plug, you plug your usb only powered hdd into that.
