I originally used a 2TB ext for my S but changed to a 4TB. It isn't completely full but I want bigger than that now, I don't have my entire library installed atm...gamepass/gold stuff is more beyond that too.
My vids are spread over 3 drives atm so it can be a little annoying sometimes working out what is where, I'd prefer to cut it down to just 2 (1 for movies and 1 for tv shows).
Might have a look at prices locally in the next week or 2.
