I'm guessing if you try Tolkien's The Silmarillion or maybe Asimov's more prominent series of books you'd be bored to tears as well

Don't get me wrong that is a great flick...but classic Japanese movies like that are much like some anime. Full of sensationalism, obviously more relevant to that particular culture.

The Dune from the 80s is also very much a David Lynch film. It's too bad the miniseries didn't have the same kind of budget and such.
