It might be like the mess that is Futurama. Google confusion about Futurama episodes/seasons if you don't know about it.
I don't know about American Dad myself, but I wouldn't be surprised if it might be similar.
Spoiler warning:
tl;dr...you might both be right depending on what episodes/seasons listing you're looking at.

Reddit copy and paste:
So if there are discrepancies with what episodes are listed in what season (eg wiki vs netflix or whatever) then things like this are going to happen with torrents. On Wikipedia, season 1 is 7 episodes.
On Netflix, season 1 is 23 episodes because it includes season 2 (according to Wikipedia) as part of season 1.
That means that Netflix is technically one season behind in numbering.
Then you have season 11, which consists of three episodes from Fox before American Dad aired on TBS. Some people consider these three episodes to be its own season, some don't even acknowledge its existence.
But then you have some people saying that the current season is season 13, some saying that it's season 12, etc.
Why and how can season numbering for a show be so confusing?
Edit: Also, considering how Netflix combines seasons 1 and 2 as one season, and how some people don't see season 11 as legitimate, wouldn't Netflix (if TBS ever decided to put their seasons of American Dad) then be two seasons behind?
Wiki list:

Futurama is confusing too, mainly because with the episodes you have movies that were turned into a season, 2 networks aired episodes, you have a production list for episodes, and there are retail (DVD/BD) volumes.

Anyway, with torrents always look at the episode names inside the torrent. If it just has basic numbering or scene names then read all the comments on the torrent page, I'm sure at least a few other people would be talking about episodes supposedly being wrong (but with most tv torrents you'll see stuff about quality, and sometimes possibly an episode missing).

If it was me I wouldn't blame the guy that created the torrent. But then I only occasionally post as anon and don't have logins for torrent sites.

is there a reason you don't search for all seasons or full series torrents?
with music, it's generally easier to find a discography than individual albums.
