Default Best setting for final fantasy VIII on epsxe

    Hi

Ive just finished playing FFVII and have now started FF VIII, the graphics are noticably worse. I´ve tried googling my way to best settings for it, and youtube aswell, i found one guide, but i guess im just too daft to understand it. im using epsxe version 1.6.0 and i cant find a youtube video for that particular version.

    http://greenimp.epsxe.com/GreenImp-ePSXeDoc.html

This is the one i found. but i have none of the optins he suggest, that or he´s shortened down names so i dont understand it. Does anyone have a guide with optimal settings for FF VIII? or who has time to help me udnerstand this guide? I really want the graphics improved before continuing with playing.

    Thanks in advance

psxdatacenter.com has the info on PSX plugin based emulation.

If you need updated plugins, search for them individually on Google.

I'm sure Warrior will be along shortly to tell you about Retroarch. It's relatively simple and very accurate but it takes a much more powerful PC than ePSXe with low settings.

Nope, even a preacher gets tired of preaching the gospel eventually.

The Mednafen PSX core in Retroarch does not require a super computer like BSNES does, if you want a accurate presentation of what PSX games originally looked like and a quite easy set it and forget it solution then I will gladly help you set up Retroarch.

You can make the games look much nicer with various shaders in Retroarch, this do not alter the actual emulation but just do various visual changes on top.

    Here is a comparison

You can "shader stack" which is one of retroarches trademark features, you can get various shaders for various purposes (not just smoothing) and put them on top of each other to get your desired effect.

different combos work great for various systems or if the game is 2D or 3D.

You can control the emu entirely with your controller for maximum convenience and speed.

    Preaching and Teaching mode terminated.

THE BEST METHOD to run PSX games (and everything else for that matter) is via Retroarch - http://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/
If you have any questions on how to set it up on Windows please feel free to ask, its very easy.

Sune, what are you trying to accomplish with epsxe? Is It just to make the game playable as the old days or (as i assume) trying to make it really pretty?
For the first situation retroarch indeed is the best solution, but for the second i found it to lack appropriate options to customize the graphics.
First you should download the latest version of epsxe (1.9.25) in their website: http://www.epsxe.com/download.php
It comes by default with the video plugin Petes OPENGL2 (In your v1.6 you must be using something else which is why you dont recognize some of the settings). If you dont want to use the latest version just download the plugin (http://www.pbernert.com/html/gpu.htm), place it in the plugins folder and select it in the video options.
For configuration try setting like this:
    Resolution/Color:
    - Select 1920x1080 Fullscreen
    - Internal X resolution: 2 - Very high
    - Internal Y resolution: 3 - Ultra high (Most likely your computer can run these settings)
    - Stretching mode: 1-Scale to, keep aspect ratio
    - Render mode: 0- standard
    - Filtering: 2 or 4
    - Hi-Res textures: 0

    Compatibility:
    - Offscreen drawing: 1
    - Framebuffer effects: 2
    - Framebuffer uploads: 1
    Misc:
    - Mdec filter: on
    - Screen filtering: on
    - Flicker-fix border size: 1

    See if it helps.

    Hi
First of all, thanks guys. apreciate the help.

What i´m aiming for is to just improve the gfx a bit. its way too grainy and squared. i know the new PC releases are miles ahead. But i prefer playing the old games. I´d just like them to be around the point of how they looked on an actual PS. No super gfx and so on.

I guess im looking to make it look like the original
So retroarch might be the right way to go. I´ve played FF7 with epsxe and it was alot better than FF8 looks, graphically.

Right, i think i got it. But now my controller doesnt register. Ive installed it for epsxe 1.70, but its not registering for epsxe 1.9.25.
Do i have to reinstall xinputwrapper which was the only way i solved the problem last time? I cant find the xinput install anywhere on my pc. so no idea how to move it

Version 1.7.0 and up can share the settings used 1.9.25 is one of the worst versions anyway though dropping back to 1.9.0 is a better option

anyway for the different versions to share the same settings just drop the main exe file into the same folder giving each version a different file name like epsxe1.7.0.exe and epsxe1.9.0.exe

version older all share the same settings also 1.6.0 shares the same as 1.5.2 and under, the reason it does not with 1.7.0 is because the core changed from 1.6.0 to 1.7.0 it was totally re-wrote at the time.

You have not mentioned the Pad used, so not sure what the issue is

Not sure what is making 8 look less graphically nice but 8 always had the better graphics vs 7
