that reminds me of a handheld they released here for kids that you'd scan bar-codes with to get monsters. I can't remember what it's called but I think they made a port of it to gameboy advance minus the bracode scanning in real life.

E reader is a tad different than the old Barcode scanners me and grouch remember.
The barcode scanner toys actually scanned real barcodes on everything you buy.
