I hear a lot of criticism of the openings in the English versions of the Tales games, but I honestly didn't think any of them were that bad. Most of the Japanese theme songs are pretty run of the mill (if pleasant enough) anyway, and few of them have any particularly strong thematic tie to the games they're in. I can understand wanting the original solely because it's the original (I very rarely watch dubs of movies in any language for the same reason), or preferring the Japanese vocal openings because they help enhance the whole "anime series" feel that the Tales games have always gone for. But I really don't see what makes the English ones so much more "shitty", and honestly, ripping the fairly generic Japanese songs out and replacing them with equally disposable, generic western fantasy music never felt like much of a change in quality to me. The only one that I could kind of understand people being ticked off with is Tales of the Abyss, given that the Japanese lyrics are not only really good but also very closely thematically tied to the game itself (the lead singer of the band worked closely with the developers in writing the song, and even contributed some other songs to the soundtrack). But that actually seems to be one of the most popular localised openings. Go figure.![]()

The AA games are seeing a slow return. Games such as Payday 2, Killing Floor, Mount and Blade (I think) etc. Basically smaller development companies working with smaller publishers or self publishing. I think last generation mid-tier disappeared for a bunch of reasons: Already existing development companies either went bankrupt or grew larger, the costs of game development skyrocketed (specially on the consoles), and mobiles became a hit making everyone want to make simple games.
Right now, the costs of mid-tier development are lowering with the influx of good cheap engines such as unreal 4 (and unity is getting pretty good too). Mobile craze has died down a bit, and smaller companies are slowly emerging. I definitely expect to see a return on this front.
Quite so. Just shows that their financial departments are screwing up in terms of market analysis and budget management. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
