There was a big bust recently of bitcoin sale/auction sites. And revealed that a major Worm has been around for 6 years in computers outside the USA.

Yeah. The biggest hurdle is firearms have been a part of the culture in the US for so long. The situation isn’t really comparable to other countries because of that. They could be banned or severely restricted tomorrow and as you've pointed out it would cause more harm than good because there are so many in circulation. That’s the first thing they would need to tackle, and they’d have to do it very, very gradually. I think the only realistic way would be to outright ban imports, then start to reduce domestic production while introducing ownership restrictions on a federal rather than state level. In terms of timescale you’d be probably talking 10 or 20 years at minimum to do this. Maybe even an entire generation.

A long term strategy is the only way to change gun laws, and that will never happen in the US because a government planning for anything beyond the next four or eight years is very difficult for obvious reasons. Not to mention it would be blocked at every turn regardless.

Which is a good thing, because only a fool would give up all right to defend themselves. Solely relying on Big Brother for everything, especially your security, is never a good thing.

You can't even buy automatic weapons without a very specialized license and even then they are banned in most states.

I thought the federal ban on assault weapons didn't exist anymore.

Assault weapons doesn't mean automatic weapons. I have an assault rifle and it's semi-auto, not automatic. The majority of "assault weapons" in the US are semi-auto.

Its just a political label for aggressive weapons, with characteristics such as removable magazine, flash hider/suppressor, pistol grip, etc...

I'm not saying guns should necessarily be banned outright. I do think there need to be stricter controls, however. At the very least I believe mandatory licensing should eventually be implemented. It needs to be enforced on a federal level, renewable on a regular basis and, most importantly, should require you to pass an extensive firearm safety course. That's not going to stop anyone from owning them for legitimate purposes like sport or home defense. It will however educate people to use them responsibly and help prevent accidents which make up a huge portion of firearm related death statistics. You have to pass a test to drive a car because in the wrong hands they're dangerous. Guns shouldn’t be treated any differently in my view.
