meh, I got around halfway I think before I got bored and dropped it but I when I did it was only like a year and a bit ago and I have trouble getting into older games of this style unless I've played it before.

If it's anything like the SNES it might shoot up within the next couple of years but thankfully for the time being it's still very affordable and a great system to collect for. I usually stick to loose carts and even on eBay you won't pay more than £10 maximum for most of the popular games. The less known/sought after stuff isn't even £5. There are still maybe only a dozen or so games with "silly" prices, and even games on the higher end of that scale like Conker really aren't all that bad when compared to what various SNES games fetch.

And yeah, Saturn collections are the path to madness. I acquired a tiny collection of fairly common PAL stuff about ten years ago when it was still cheap but lusted after a Japanese Saturn forever. Finally caved and bought one years ago and oh look, everything worth playing now costs almost as much as the console did. Other than the stuff it came bundled with I've only bought two (cheap) games for it since. LESSON LEARNED.
N64 is now really brutal here compared to where it was when you look at reseller/store/ebay prices. Especially for CIB. Even just nm carts though...Super Smash is $60, CBFD is around $90 etc...every good game in general (not that N64 has a ton mind you) is up at least $10-15 cart only.

As for Saturn I think I've mentioned this before but my 8 game US Saturn collection averages out to $81 a game on a bad day. Even crap games are like $20-25 CIB now. By contrast I've gotten loads of Japanese games for basically nothing. Except for shmups most Japanese releases have not retained much value. Honestly they probably have more value to US gamers looking for a cheaper alternative than they do in Japan. I have no issues with playing the Japanese versions. The only reason I have the 8 US games I do is 7 for collection purposes (shining series and WD games) and 1 I got a good deal on.

It's funny, you can't even blame nostalgia for that one because the NES really wasn't all that popular here. It still did well obviously but everyone had computers at the time and didn't really bother with consoles because the games were so much more expensive. I guess it's probably thanks to internet stuff like AVGN but still, it's baffling. Consoles didn't really catch on here until the Mega Drive, then of course the Playstation hit it out of the park.
There was a big NES boom in NA awhile back. Probably just trickled down worldwide over time. And yeah I'd say AVGN is a factor.

THE BEST METHOD to run PSX games (and everything else for that matter) is via Retroarch - http://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/
If you have any questions on how to set it up on Windows please feel free to ask, its very easy.
